Last week, Greenpeace activists succeeded in temporarily halting Shell’s icebreaker, MSV Fennica, from starting its voyage out of Portland, Oregon. The vessel was to join the rest of the fleet on its way to the Artic to begin oil exploration. In defiance of a federal court injunction to halt river traffic, 13 Greenpeace activists hung off St. Johns Bridge while kayaks below blocked the waterway, preventing the ship from passing under the bridge. After a day of delays, the vessel left Oregon early Friday morning with the help of law enforcement, after a federal judge found Greenpeace in contempt and fined them $17,500 for impeding the ships progress. read more

Markets | Mon Aug 3, 2015 4:21pm EDT

Oil prices lurched 5 percent lower on Monday to their lowest since January, taking global benchmark Brent below $50 a barrel as weak factory activity in China deepened a commodity-wide rout.

Growing concerns over excess global oil supplies, heavy selling in pumped-up gasoline futures and technically driven momentum trading knocked prices to within a few dollars of the six-year lows touched at the start of this year.

U.S. crude had already fallen 21 percent in July, its worst month since 2008 amid mounting evidence of an expanding global glut and a stock market collapse in China, the world’s largest energy consumer. read more

Royal Dutch Shell Plc will swap a stake in one of its international energy assets for part of Gazprom PJSC’s Sakhalin-3 project as Europe’s biggest oil company extends ties with Russia.

The companies are discussing which asset would be offered to Gazprom, Shell Chief Executive Officer Ben Van Beurden said last week in London. For Shell, the prize is greater involvement in the world’s biggest gas reserves.

“Russia sits on 25 percent of the world’s gas reserves and is very, very close to markets that we are very familiar with,” Van Beurden said July 30, on the sidelines of the company’s earnings presentation. Shell is also pushing “to see how we can work with Gazprom internationally.” read more

Environmental campaigners have begun a month of protests over oil giant Shell’s efforts to drill in the Arctic with a Titanic-themed orchestral performance.

Greenpeace is holding protests outside Shell’s London headquarters against the company’s attempts to undertake oil drilling in the Arctic, which the campaigners warn could lead to environmental disaster and worsen climate change.

The protests began with a performance of Requiem for Arctic Ice, an orchestral piece inspired by the famous story of the musicians continuing to play as the Titanic sank after it hit an iceberg, by the Crystal Palace Quartet and supporting musicians. read more

Shell to dispose of its downstream assets and business completely?

Screen Shot 2015-07-31 at 19.22.09A report in The Times today describes the plans for Shell Centre development:

London waterfront to take on new look with Italian backing

On the face of it it raises the question as to why, given the movement of the centre of gravity in Royal Dutch Shell to The Netherlands, RDS would want to hold onto a large London office at all. Why be almost unique among large multinationals in having two head Offices?

The answer is in the article. “One Southbank Place will be the new headquarters for Shell International’s downstream business”.  read more

by Anna Reynolds: 3 August 2015

The orchestral performance entitled ‘Requiem for Arctic Ice’ was inspired by the quartet playing on the Titanic as the ship went down.

Today’s protest on the South Bank is part of a month-long campaign against oil drilling. Each Shell employee was offered a gift bag with a copy of the music and a whistle-blower email address.

A Shell spokesman said: “It is disappointing that Greenpeace continually chooses to focus on mounting publicity stunts rather than engage constructively in the debate about how to meet the world’s growing demand for energy while reducing CO2 emissions. read more

Greenpeace’s ongoing attack on Royal Dutch Shell is a concern for energy resource and thus human development around the world. It failed, but Greenpeace just tried to stop Shell’s icebreaker from leaving port in Portland, Oregon, in the hopes of blocking Shell’s drilling plans in the Arctic. Greenpeacers dangled from ropes off St. Johns Bridge to stop the Arctic drilling ship. A federal judge in Alaska ordered Greenpeace to pay $2,500 for every hour that protesters block the icebreaker from leaving Portland. read more
