The U.S. declared one of Russia’s largest offshore oil and natural gas fields off limits to American tools and expertise, potentially disrupting Royal Dutch Shell Plc’s plans to liquefy the fossil fuel for export.

Sanctions imposed to punish Russian President Vladimir Putin’s regime for the annexation of Crimea and support for Ukrainian separatists were expanded to bar the transport of U.S.-made equipment to Gazprom PJSC’s Yuzhno-Kirinskoye field off Russia’s eastern coast, according to a U.S. Department of Commerce statement on Friday. read more

In a notoriously contaminated Carson neighborhood where homeowners have been waiting for years for someone to neutralize the toxic goo beneath their homes and yards, relief is finally within sight.

Cleanup plans were finalized recently after four years of invasive testing and debate over what to do with tons of underground waste oil abandoned in the Carousel Tract in the 1960s and rediscovered in 2008.

But things won’t be fixed overnight. In fact, residents can expect at least six more years of smelly, noisy work before they have their neighborhood — and their lives — back. read more

Shell has started its drilling operations in the Arctic and the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) is keeping very close tabs on their activities.

BSEE Inspectors arrived in the Chukchi Sea to ensure the oil major is in compliance with federal regulations and safety standards. The BSEE will oversee Shell’s drilling operations 24/7 in perpetuity. Two inspectors are onsite at the drill sites. One is onboard the Polar Pioneer, a semi-submersible drilling unit, at Burger J. The other is with the Noble Discoverer, a drillship, at Burger V. read more

Royal Dutch Shell is considering investing billions in Brazil, set to become a focal point after the planned acquisition of BG Group, even as it prepares to sell huge chunks of its business to pay for the $70bn (£45.11bn) deal.

Despite a broad drive to cut spending in the face of persistently low oil prices, chief executive Ben Van Beurden remains steadfast in his plans to buy BG, which will transform Shell into the world’s biggest liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplier. read more

The long-delayed $1bn clean-up of heavily oil-contaminated Ogoniland in the Niger delta has moved closer with Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari setting up a restoration fund four years after a damning UN report advised the government and oil industry to act urgently.

But a spokesman for Shell, which discovered oil in Ogoniland in 1957 and exploited it until it was forced out because of pollution in 1993, said money would not be released until the Nigerian government went further, establishing a satisfactory governing structure and appointing commissioners to oversee the clean-up process. read more
