(Reuters) – Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton on Tuesday staked out her opposition to Arctic oil exploration, a day after the Obama administration gave Royal Dutch Shell final approval to drill off Alaska.
“The Arctic is a unique treasure,” Clinton said in a Twitter post. “Given what we know, it’s not worth the risk of drilling.”

On Monday, the Obama administration gave Shell final approval to resume drilling into the oil zone off northern Alaska for the first time since 2012. read more

Shell has been given the green light to drill in the Arctic but as well as the opportunity for huge rewards, the inhospitable region brings huge risks

In James Cameron’s epic science fiction film Avatar, humans travel to the moon Pandora in search of a highly valuable mineral that will help save the Earth from an energy crisis, and ultimately from extinction.
To extract the mineral, the explorers must destroy the lush tropical rainforest that envelopes Pandora, and ultimately the homes of the native Na’vi people.
It’s a sacrifice Parker Selfridge, the greedy head of The Resources Development Administration is willing to make, but ultimately the humans are defeated and sent packing. The name of the mineral they fail to get their hands on? Unobtainium. read more

TOM BAWDEN: THE INDEPENDENT: Tuesday 18 August 2015
Shell’s shares slumped today after the US government finally gave it the green light to drill for oil and gas in the Arctic Ocean.
The FTSE 100 oil giant will be able to explore the ocean floor for hydrocarbons for the first time since 2012, when a series of mishaps including the grounding of a drilling rig off the coast of Alaska, ended a costly Arctic programme that has cost $7bn over the past decade and has yet to find a drop of oil.
But despite receiving final clearance by the Obama administration to finally resume drilling, investors were unimpressed, sending the group’s shares down by 14.50p, or 0.81%, to 1,778.50p. read more

English translation below of the text shown on the centre section of the above German road map published by Shell in Nazi Germany after Hitler came to power in January 1933. Shell boasted about its contribution to the German economy stretching back to 1924. We assume the map provided directions to the Polish border.
In the years approaching WW2, the ardent Nazi, Sir Henri Deterding, was in control at Shell along with likeminded Group Managing Directors (two of whom subsequently became Director Generals of Shell), all willing to get into bed with the Nazis. read more

WASHINGTON — The federal government Monday gave Shell the final permit it needs to drill for oil in the Arctic Ocean off Alaska’s northwest coast for the first time in more than two decades.
President Obama is ending restrictions on Shell’s drilling in the Arctic Ocean — even as he prepares a trip to Alaska to highlight the dangers of climate change.
The Interior Department, satisfied that Shell can handle any emergencies, is approving the oil company’s request to drill deep enough to hit oil in the waters off the northwest coast of Alaska. Shell is betting it will find a giant pool. read more

Brazil’s National Petroleum Agency (ANP) ruled that Royal Dutch Shell (RDSa.L) and its Qatari and Indian partners need to treat oil and gas fields in the Parque das Conchas area as a single deposit, Shell said, a move that could increase taxes on output.
Shell owns 50 percent of Parque das Conchas, its main Brazilian asset. Qatar’s state oil company Qatar Petroleum [QATPE.UL] owns 23 percent and India’s ONGC (ONGC.NS) owns 27 percent. read more

BEIJING: Royal Dutch Shell has entered a framework deal with a Chinese energy firm to jointly purchase and distribute liquefied natural gas, Shell said on Tuesday, a rare cooperation between a global energy company and a local private player.
Shell signed the non-binding framework agreement with Guanghui Energy Co Ltd, which is building a gas receiving terminal in Qidong of Jiangsu province with a designed annual handling capacity of around 600,000 tonnes in its first phase. read more
