Shell sells last of its Haynesville position

Royal Dutch Shell is officially moving out of the gassy Haynesville shale after selling its last package of acreage to a private Houston firm.

Houston-based Castleton Resources, which primarily focuses on the Haynesville in East Texas and Louisiana, will scoop up about 55,000 net acres from Shell that’s currently producing more than 100,000 cubic feet of natural gas per day. The companies are not revealing the sale price.

Shell previously sold most of its Haynesville position five years ago, but still had some piecemeal remaining acreage. read more

U.S. Sanctions On Russia’s Nord Stream 2 May Be Half-Hearted

Russia is not forcing Shell to buy its gas. Shell is also a big investor in solar power and is a 50% owner in offshore wind farms Atlantic Shores in New Jersey and the Mayflower Consortium in Massachusetts.

Kenneth Rapoza

Last week’s announcement from the White House of a cease and desist order for the foreign firms building the Russia-to-Germany natural gas line may come about a year too late.

Nord Stream 2 was always seen as a slap in the face to Ukraine, once a main route into Europe for Gazprom’s natural gas from Russia. But Russia and Ukraine have since gone their separate ways, pulled closer into Europe and the U.S.’s orbit by both Washington and Brussels, and now Russia has opted to look for alternatives. read more

Expect More Writedowns From Oil Majors

By Nick Cunningham – Dec 22, 2019, 6:00 PM CST

On Friday, Royal Dutch Shell announced that it would take a $1.7-$2.3 billion write down for the fourth quarter, another financial blow to an industry dealing with oversupply and low prices.

The write down is the result of the bad “macro outlook,” Shell said in a press release, which refers to the slowdown in the global economy, weak demand growth and relatively low prices for gas, oil and for refining margins. “Additional well write-offs in the range of $100-200 million are expected compared to the fourth quarter 2018. No cash impact is expected,” Shell said in a statement. The company’s share price in London fell 1 percent on the news. read more

Shell Makes Significant Find Offshore Australia

by  Andreas Exarheas: Rigzone Staff: Monday, December 23, 2019

Shell Australia has announced a “significant” gas and condensate discovery in the Browse Basin off the North West Coast of Western Australia.

The find was made through the Bratwurst-1 exploration well, which was said to be successfully concluded after a 78-day campaign. The discovery is located 99 miles north east of the Shell operated Prelude FLNG facility and presents an opportunity for a future tie-back to Prelude, according to Shell.

No figures were released in connection with the discovery, but it was said to support Shell’s growth plans for “more and cleaner energy, with LNG being the predominant focus for Shell in Australia”. read more

Dutch firms to study solar-to-hydrogen project

By Energy Reporters  |

Dutch transmission operator Enexis, natural gas infrastructure firm Gasunie and oil producer Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij (NAM) are in discussions over plans to convert spare solar power into hydrogen.

The three firms said a feasibility study was being conducted for sites owned by NAM, a joint venture formed by Royal Dutch Shell and ExxonMobil, in Emmen and Drenthe with the results expected in the middle of next month.

Enexis said: “The research is examining the conditions under which it is feasible to directly convert locally generated sustainable energy into hydrogen. And whether that energy can be transported via existing gas pipelines to customers so that this green energy still contributes to the energy transition.” read more

Shell said the new facility replaces its existing $8.84 billion revolving credit facility and is provided by a syndicate of 25 banks.

The Bank of America and Barclays Bank acted as joint co-ordinators for the facility.

Interest and fees paid on the facility will be linked to Shell’s progress towards reaching its short-term net-zero carbon goal.

Shell-Backed Developer Completes Georgia Solar Farm for Facebook

By Brian Eckhouse: 12 December 2019, 19:00 GMT

A Royal Dutch Shell Plc-backed solar developer commissioned a solar project in Georgia that will help power a Facebook Inc. data center.

Silicon Ranch Corp.’s 102.5-megawatt plant in Early County is Facebook’s first solar project in Georgia, and was developed as part of an agreement with local utility Walton Electric Membership Corp. It uses Hanwha Q Cells Co. modules that were produced at the manufacturer’s new factory in the state.

Walton Electric recently signed a deal with Silicon Ranch for another solar project in the state that will power the Facebook data center. The 107-megawatt facility in Denton is expected to be commissioned in 2021. Facebook has signed almost 950 megawatts of clean power-supply agreements this year, the third-most globally among corporations, according to BloombergNEF. read more

The Pensions Ombudsman criticised over Shell pension climate risk decision

  By Jack Gray: 12/12/19

Environmental lawyers at ClientEarth have criticised The Pensions Ombudsman’s (TPO) decision not to uphold a complaint against the Shell Contributory Pension Fund’s (SCPF) climate risk policies.

Concerns were raised as TPO did not ask the SCPF to release information to the claimant about how it deals with the financial risks posed by its investments in fossil fuels and its sponsorship by an oil and gas company.

SCPF member Christoph Harwood had been seeking reassurance that the scheme is properly dealing with risks posed to members’ pension as a result of their policies. read more

Interview: Shell sees LNG as starting block for shipping’s energy transition

London — Global energy producer Shell is betting on LNG as the first step in ridding shipping of its greenhouse gas emissions while cleaner fuels are still in research and development.

Beyond next year’s tougher sulfur emission limits, the next big regulatory challenge for shipping will be decarbonization. The International Maritime Organization has set an initial strategy of cutting carbon emissions per ship by at least 40% by 2030, and total greenhouse gas emissions for the shipping industry as a whole by at least 50% from 2008’s levels by 2050. read more

Shell and the Gas Wealth

Shell and the Gas Wealth

Irina Slav: Oilprice.com: December 8, 2019

When Shell bought BG Group for $53 billion in 2016, becoming the largest gas company in the world, it attracted a lot of criticism. Now, thanks to its natural gas exposure and specifically its LNG exposure, Shell is one of the best-performing stocks in the industry in the year to date. It is also the biggest public oil company by production, which stood at3.8 million barrels of oil equivalent per day at the end of the third quarter.

The Anglo-Dutch major is not just one of the biggest LNG producers, but also one of the biggest LNG shippers globally. It is also among the top performers in terms of revenue, ranking second in the world after China’s Sinopec. Shell is also actively expanding in renewables and energy storage, preparing the ground for future domination in the energy industry, too. read more

Bad News for Gas Sellers as Slowdown In China Set to Worsen

(Bloomberg) — A slowdown in gas demand growth in China, the driver of global use over the past two years, is expected to slacken further, adding to investor concern as supply continues to build.

Consumption in 2021-2025 will grow at a slower pace than it has in the current five-year period, a researcher at China’s economic planning department said at the BloombergNEF summit in Shanghai on Wednesday. Shell wins court case to stop activists boarding North Sea rigs

Wednesday 04 December 2019

Energy company Shell has won a court order to prevent activists from boarding installations in the North Sea.

The company secured an interim interdict against Greenpeace at the Court of Session in Edinburgh on Wednesday.

Shell began the action after environmentalists spent the night on its Brent Alpha and Bravo platforms in October to campaign against leaving parts of them in the sea. The Brent Field is situated 116 miles off the coast of Lerwick, Shetland, midway between the Shetland Isles and the coast of Norway. A Shell spokesman said: “Shell sought this court order only to prevent protesters breaching the statutory 500-metre safety zones around platforms in the Brent field, putting themselves and Shell staff at risk.

“We wholeheartedly support the right to protest peacefully and safely.

“We’re pleased this decision recognises that the existing legal safety zone should be respected by campaigners.”

Shell said of the four Brent platforms, only one – Brent Charlie – is now manned, from which Shell staff could be required to give urgent assistance to any protesters in the event of an emergency but this would also put their teams at risk. read more
