By Mo Ahmad – September 4, 2015

Alaska’s fiscal crisis seemed unimaginable only a few years ago when oil fields in the North Slope brought in revenue that allowed the state to forego sales and income taxes while issuing yearly checks to every resident and banking billions for rainy days. “Now we’re coming out of that and it looks like we’re moving into a time period of good weather”.

However, Obama will speak on Monday in Alaska about the necessity to take urgent and aggressive action against climate change, during a three-day trip to raise awareness on the effects of global warming. Insiders Perspective on Shell VP Arjen Dorland

Royal Dutch Shell VP Arjen Dorland

Royal Dutch Shell VP Arjen Dorland

One of few respected IT-illuminati, shortly before he retired, suggested that Dorland was a bit of an animal if not held on a tight leash…

From a Shell Source

Amusing to see Arjen Dorland extolling the virtues of technological enablement of exploration within Shell especially given his limited engagement with and knowledge of this part of the business. One suggests that there is an ulterior motive here and one worth going through in detail. It’s been noted on here previously how Arjen Dorland first rose without trace at the start of the millennium in the battered Shell IT organisation, having originally been identified as a JG 1-2 maximum level employee (the Shell system, as we all know, sets CEP levels for all its staff and this system is rigorously enforced by the myriad HR managers that Shell homes and encourages). He remains to this day intensely bitter about that initial positioning and it explains his character and motivation to a ‘T’. read more

Executive Pay

In the Oil & Gas sector we know that today’s decisions usually impact on results  several years out into the future.  I see todays Shell results largely attributable to decisions made by Jeroen van der Veer and Linda Cook on Sakhalin and Qatar.  They had the determination and vision to play the long game and take Shell to where it is now.  It is upsetting to see the current management team claiming credit and excessive financial rewards off the efforts of others.  Today’s team gets top marks for spin but the jury is still out on their business performance.   read more

Canada candidate for top Shell job

Financial Times: Canada candidate for top Shell job

By Carola Hoyos in London

Royal Dutch/Shell yesterday announced the first promotion to its committee of managing directors since the scandal over its oil and gas reserves cut its members from six to three.

The appointment of Linda Cook, president and chief executive of Shell Canada, requires approval by shareholders at next month’s annual meeting. If it is passed, she will take up her post in August.

She is to run the group’s natural gas and power operations – a position she held before her move to Canada in 2003.

Graphic From Daily Mail Article: Shell braced for yet another revolt over directors’ pay

Wilt Staph Posting on Apr 15th, 2010 at 10:16 am

Shell insiders will be shocked but not surprised by the revelations about Linda cook’s departure. There are two main factors at play in this sorry saga – Americanisation and diversity. Senior American executives in Shell have historically had bonus and pay structures which far exceed those of their mainly European colleagues. The uneasy relationship between Shell’s US subsidiary, Shell Oil, and the rest of RDS over the years led to a number of high-flying Americans moving into the Shell international arena to try and address this problem. In virtually every instance these moves have been unmitigated disasters. read more

Shell braced for yet another revolt over directors’ pay

“The oil titan is set to encounter protests over a controversial £4.8m severance deal for its former gas and power chief Linda Cook, a leading institutional shareholder told the Mail.”

Royal Dutch Shell faces another turbulent annual general meeting next month after failing to assuage all of its investors’ concerns about director pay.

The oil titan is set to encounter protests over a controversial £4.8m severance deal for its former gas and power chief Linda Cook, a leading institutional shareholder told the Mail.

Discontent is also simmering after chief financial officer Simon Henry moved to a Dutch employment contract, which will ensure more generous rights. And a hearty compensation package handed to former chief executive Jeroen van der Veer remains a bone of contention. read more

Short-termism at Royal Dutch Shell

There is a culpable short-termism about Shell at the moment. But we have seen it all before.

POSTING ON SHELL BLOG 26 MARCH 2010 BY “Wilt Staph”

There is a culpable short-termism about Shell at the moment. But we have seen it all before.

It is mind-blowing that one of the world’s largest corporations cannot:

(a) Decide what its strategy is

(b) Use its huge resources to stick with that strategy over the medium to long term.

I would humbly suggest:

(1) Concentrate exclusively on upstream and midstream oil and gas.

(2) Get rid of activities that fall outside the competances of those at the top (Refining and Marketing especially). read more

Shell to sell refineries to boost output

Daily Telegraph: Royal Dutch Shell has unveiled the most dramatic overhaul of its business in recent memory, outlining plans to exit more than a third of its 90 retail markets, slash refining capacity and return to growth after seven years of falling output.

Peter Voser, chief executive, unveiled a further 1,000 jobs cuts in addition to the 6,000 already announced as he vowed to “sharpen up” Shell in the next three years by boosting output by 11pc.

“Shell has been disadvantaged recently, due to our higher exposure to refining and natural gas, where margins are hard-wired to the economy,” Mr Voser said.

“The priorities are for a more competitive performance, for growth, and for sharper delivery of strategy. We have more to do to drive out cost and improve the operating performance in the company.” read more

Royal Dutch Shell unveiled one of the most radical restructurings in its 119-year history yesterday in a move placing thousands of jobs at risk.

Incoming chief executive Peter Voser is aiming to slash costs, cut project overruns and speed up decision making through the overhaul announced yesterday following the departure of gas and power chief Linda Cook.

Massive shake-up at Shell puts 24,000 jobs at risk

Up to a third of senior management under threat

By Sarah Arnott

Thursday, 28 May 2009

Hot on the heels of the surprise resignation of top executive Linda Cook, Shell’s in-coming chief executive Peter Voser announced major restructuring plans yesterday that could cut thousands of rank-and-file jobs.

Some 24,000 staff at the Anglo-Dutch oil giant will be affected by the changes, with job losses expected to be in the thousands. Up to a third of senior management are believed to be under threat.

There are three major structural changes. The company’s three upstream businesses – exploration and production (EP), gas and power (GP) and oil sands – will be combined into two, new regional units: Upstream Americas and Upstream International. Mr Voser is also creating an entirely new “Projects & Technology” division which will manage everything from R&D to project delivery to contracting and procurement. Finally, some parts of Shell corporate are to be absorbed into specific business units, while the rest is streamlined under a single combined human resources (HR) corporate director role. read more

Shell to cut up to 10,000 jobs in worldwide restructuring

May 28, 2009

More than 10,000 jobs at Royal Dutch Shell are under threat as Peter Voser, the oil giant’s new chief executive, announced a radical shake-up of the company.

In a series of moves designed to slash billions of dollars from Shell’s cost base and sharpen its focus in an era of low oil prices, the company said it was merging three divisions into two, creating a new one charged with project management and trimming the number of executive directors on its board from five to three.

“Organisationally, we are too complex, and our culture is still too consensus-oriented. Our costs are simply too high,” Mr Voser told staff in an e-mail before briefing 200 senior executives on the plans at a special meeting in Berlin. read more

Royal Dutch Shell Gas and Power Executive Director Linda Cook

Linda Cook, the head of Shell’s gas business, resigned abruptly yesterday, the first boardroom casualty at the hands of Peter Voser, the new chief executive of the oil company.

Mrs Cook, who fought Mr Voser for the top job, is leaving after a “mutual decision” with the new boss and is forgoing an £800,000 loyalty bonus because she is quitting before 2011. Former Shell Exec Paddy Briggs comments on Linda Cook departure

By Paddy Briggs

Cook’s departure is ego-driven. She lost out – so she walks away in a huff. But then that’s what you do when the only thing that matters is self-aggrandisement. What charecterises Shell head honchos in recent times is that it is all about self. Power, position, perks and obscenely inflated bonuses and rewards – and to hell with the business or the tradition or the history of this once great company and once respected brand. And to hell with the stakeholders as well. Suppliers, Partners, local communities, employees, pensioners and society at large are the disposable small fry in the selfish and self-centered world of Van Der Veer, Cook, Brinded and the rest. read more

Shell’s top gas executive, Linda Cook, resigns ahead of CEO change

Los Angeles Times

TOBY STERLING, AP Business Writer  3:13 AM PDT, May 26, 2009 AMSTERDAM (AP) — Shell’s top gas executive and highest-ranking woman, Linda Cook, is stepping down June 1, the company said Tuesday, without giving a reason.

Cook, 50, had sometimes been mentioned as a possible successor to Chief Executive Jeroen van der Veer, who is retiring July 1. Instead the top job went to Peter Voser, the company’s chief financial officer.

“It’s a mutual decision,” said Shell spokesman Shaun Wiggins of Cook’s departure. He said the company or Cook might elaborate further later but at the moment had nothing to add.

Cook was a Shell employee for 29 years, joining the company in Houston when she was 21. She has a degree in petroleum engineering from the University of Kansas.

In a statement, Van der Veer thanked Cook and noted the company’s liquid natural gas capacity has risen by 60 percent since she took her job five years ago. As oil production declined in the same period, Shell’s total production is now almost equally split between gas and oil. read more
