MOSOP Demands Apology from Gen Useni: Calls for review of Ogoni 9 Murder

Thursday, November 06, 2008

The Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People in Diaspora, MOSOP-USA, is vexed with what it called the Jeremiah Useni’s blasphemy; demanding an unreserved apology to the Ogoni people.

The group in a statement signed by its President, Chief IkpoBari Senewo; secretary, Mrs. Catherine Nwileh-Ibeagha and Publicity secretary, Mr. Felix Gumnwee, made available to Niger Delta STANDARD, decried the statement credited to rtd. General Jeremiah Useni justifying the gruesome murder of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other of our compatriots, reported in the Daily Sun of Tuesday, October 28, 2008.

“We strongly demand that rtd. General Jeremiah Useni tenders an immediate open and unreserved apology to the Ogoni people for justifying the cruel hanging of our innocent leader Ken Saro-Wiwa and our Ogoni Eight colleagues to please the multinational oil company Shell, with immediate effect”.

The group stated. While commending MOSOPNigeria and the Ogoni youths for the reactions so far taken on the issue; the group regretted that the said ‘blasphemy’ of its assassinated leaders was coming on “the heels of the 13th Anniversary Commemoration of the feral judicial murder of our beloved heroes”.

The statement further remarked that “Useni’s unguarded and irresponsible utterances have not only “murdered sleep” but have also opened wounds that were yet to heal, added insult to injury and slapped the Ogoni people even as they continue to weep on the graves of their loved ones”. It called on President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua administration not to keep mute “over these outlandish polemics from the likes of Rtd. General Jeremiah Useni”; calling on him to demonstrate succinctly that his administration is not playing patty cake with the Ogoni people.

“We hereby request MOSOP Nigeria to take it a notch up by writing to President Yar’Adua to immediately institute an Administrative Panel of Investigation to review the circumstance surrounding the murders in Ogoniland between 1993 – 1995, with particular attention to the Auta Tribunal which tried and convicted Saro- Wiwa and our compatriots, and the system which denied them their rights to appeal and endorsed their immediate unholy hanging”, the group said.

October 31, 2008. For Immediate Press Release

THE JEREMIAH USENI’s BLASPHEMY: Useni must apologize to the Ogoni People!

The statement credited to rtd. General Jeremiah Useni justifying the gruesome murder of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight others of our compatriots, reported in the Daily Sun of Tuesday, October 28, 2008, has come to our attention. We are pleased with the immediate reactions from other segments of the Ogoni society and especially welcome the reactions of Ogoni youths and MOSOP Nigeria.

We strongly demand that rtd. General Jeremiah Useni tender an immediate open and unreserved apology to the Ogoni people for justifying the cruel hanging of our innocent leader Ken Saro-Wiwa and our Ogoni Eight colleagues to please the multinational oil company Shell, with immediate effect. Coming on the heels of the 13th Anniversary Commemoration of the feral judicial murder of our beloved heroes, Useni’s unguarded and irresponsible utterances have not only “murdered sleep” but have also opened wounds that were yet to heal, added insult to injury and slapped the Ogoni people even as they continue to weep on the graves of their loved ones. Will the Yar’Adua administration keep mute over these outlandish polemics from the likes of rtd. General Jeremiah Useni? At this moment, the Yar’Adua administration must demonstrate succinctly that it is not playing patty cake with the Ogoni people.

We hereby request MOSOP Nigeria to take it a notch up by writing to President Yar’Adua to immediately institute an Administrative Panel of Investigation to review the circumstance surrounding the murders in Ogoniland between 1993 – 1995, with particular attention to the Auta Tribunal which tried and convicted Saro-Wiwa and our compatriots, and the system which denied them their rights to appeal and endorsed their immediate unholy hanging. The Panel of Investigation should be given freehand to in-depth investigation and subsequent prosecution of every individual, company or group behind the gruesome hanging of Ken Saro-Wiwa and our Eight Ogoni compatriots.

We make this request for the sole reason of putting a final stop to such future absurdities and inflammatory statements as the ones that are being spewed by the likes of Jeremiah Useni, so as not to continually remind the Ogoni people of the indignities and injustices they have suffered in a Nigerian nation-state since oil was struck in commercial quantities in Ogoniland in 1958.

We again call on all Ogoni people, UNPO, Sierra Club, Amnesty International, the United Nations and all supporters of the Ogoni Cause all over the world to totally condemn rtd General Jeremiah Useni’s profanity against Ken Saro-Wiwa and the Ogoni Eight. We urge you to write President Yar’Adua, Vice President Goodluck Jonathan, the Nigerian Houses of Senate and Representatives demanding the government’s public declaration that our leader Ken Saro-Wiwa and the Ogoni Eight were not criminals and that they were hanged on trumped up charges.

We further call on the Yar’Adua administration to give the Ogoni people a STATE of their own. If any state is created in Nigeria without the creation of an OGONI STATE, it will tantamount to cheating and further justify the tragic conditioning of every successive Nigerian government to destroy the Ogoni people for exclusive oil exploitation.

Finally, we note that coming from a cabinet minister of Jerry Useni’s standing, his statement does not only confirm the complicity of the Nigerian government in the judicial murder of the Ogoni 9, but also underscores the fact that it was a calculated attempt to exclusively disgrace and cow the Ogoni people. Although the government and Shell Oil may have carried out this barbaric act for their greedy reasons, the Ogoni people will remain uncowed and will not be stopped from demanding for our rights, for asking for a fair share of our God-given resources, for the cleaning of our environment, and for demanding the payment of all owed royalties and mining rents from Shell and its cohorts.

While we reiterate our commitment to non-violence, especially in the pursuit of our demands, we insist that rtd General Jerry Useni MUST tender an immediate open and unreserved apology to the Ogoni people for his insults and for justifying the cruel hanging of our innocent leader Ken Saro-Wiwa and our Eight sons.
