When Corporations Spy

The Sunday Times reported in 2001 that Hakluyt hired Manfred Schlickenrieder, a German foreign intelligence operative tasked by the firm to spy on Greenpeace at the behest of oil giants BP and Shell.

Hakluyt & Co spy-work for Shell and BP

THE UN Secretary-General’s special envoy Alexander Downer, reported Offsite, is a director of an intelligence gathering firm, Hakluyt & Co, which was set up in 1995 by two former MI6 agents. The company, according to Offsite, sells information to companies, regarding government decisions and plans; in the past it had been passing information to Shell and BP about the activities of Greenpeace.

Dwindling demand may put some projects on back burner

The cost of securing the Corrib project continues to rise. The huge €11m outlay was calculated in August and does not cover the escalating protests in August and September as Shell attempted to start laying the pipe along the sea bed.

Hakluyt set up by former MI6 agents spied on campaign groups for Shell and BP

Hakluyt was set up by former MI6 agents in 1995. The firm once hired a former German agent to spy on environmental campaign groups such as Greenpeace on behalf of oil companies. It was unavailable for comment.
