Comments from an employee at Shells Albian Village 83 km north of Fort McMurray, Alberta in northern Canada.

Hello, I work at Shells Albian Village for ESS Catering which is 83 km north of Fort McMurray, Alberta in northern Canada.

I just read this article;

 http://royaldutchshellgroup.com/2007/12/06/the-wall-street-journal-this-is-the-life-luxurious-digs-on-frigid-oil-sands/

…and wondered if you are aware how different the treatment of our workers is compared to that of the construction workers. Yes, you have an airstrip and provide transportation to the construction employee’s.

However, the ESS Catering employee’s that feed these workers not only do not have transportation provided (other than a meager 150 per month added to our checks…if they remember) on those company planes but we are now expected to make our own way into camp from Fort Mcmurray which is a $160 cab ride away as well. I just figured out how much it will cost me per month for transportation both ways. read more

Saturday, February 23, 2008

Shell Ireland has said a fire near its Corrib gas terminal at Bellanaboy in County Mayo was malicious and was not accidental.

The fire broke out after 9pm last night about a kilometre and a half away from the boundary of Shell’s Corrib gas terminal at Bellanaboy, causing several thousand of euro worth of damage.

It happened at an area known as Aghoose on lands owned by Coillte.

Shell has said it had stacked about a hundred bog mats, which are used to make temporary roads for the movement of machinery in the area, and it was these which caught fire. read more

Royal Dutch Shell PLC is asking U.S. regulators to ease rules so that the company can book oil and gas reserves from unconventional sources such as its Canadian tar sands operations, the Financial Times reported on its Web site Friday.

Under U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission rules, oil companies may only book reserves from oil and gas finds that are considered readily available or from “conventional” sources. These don’t include sources such as tar sands, which are normally classified as a mining operation. read more

Bloomberg: Shell Irish Gas Refinery Fire Deliberately Set, Scotsman Says

By Mathew Carr

Feb. 23 (Bloomberg) — Royal Dutch Shell Plc said a fire at a natural gas refinery being built in western Ireland appears to have been deliberately set, the Scotsman newspaper reported, citing the Press Association.

Damage was caused to materials being used by contractors working on the Corrib Gas terminal near Belmullet, according to a report on the newspaper’s Web site.

The 200 million-euro ($297 million) refinery being built by Shell Ireland has been the subject of continual protest, the report said. More than 100 large timber mats used to construct temporary roads through bog land around the refinery site have been destroyed, it said. read more

Machinations in New Jersey Court linking Royal Dutch Shell with ambulance chaser lawyers

By John Donovan

On 19 February 2008, Judge John J. Hughes, a United States Magistrate Judge  signed Court Orders sealing legal papers concerning the payment by Shell of $29 million supposedly in respect of legal costs. The costs arose from a mini-trial relating to the Shell hydrocarbon reserves fraud.  The relevant Orders were filed with the United States District Court of New Jersey on 20 February 2008.

The Order was sought and obtained by Liaison Counsel Keefe Bartels – New Jersey based “Personal Injury Lawyers”- a type of law firm known as “ambulance chasers”; “a derogatory phrase sometimes used to describe a trial lawyer who specializes in representing accident victims” (definition borrowed from Wikipedia). read more

As the US warns the world away from business with Tehran, Moscow’s tightening ties to Iran’s energy sector underline Russia’s differences with Washington over Iranian nuclear plans and Kosovo’s independence.

While the timing of Moscow’s announcement on Tuesday may have been political, the deal for Russian state-controlled energy giant Gazprom to take on big new Iranian oil and gas projects was a long time in the making and dovetails with Gazprom’s strategic ambitions, analysts said. read more

Feb 23 2008 by Richard Down, Liverpool Daily Post

OIL giant Shell has admitted blame for a potentially lethal gas leak at a Merseyside refinery.

Explosive isobutane gas mixed with 20 tonnes of lighter fluid burst from a neglected pipe at the Stanlow petro-chemical plant in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire.

The energy company has admitted blame for allowing a safety pipe to corrode so badly that it split wide open.

Shell pleaded guilty at Chester Crown Court yesterday to failing to comply with control of major accident hazard regulations for several years running up to the accident in May 2003. read more
