The Sunday Times: Centrica seeks North Sea gasfields

February 24, 2008
Iain Dey

CENTRICA, the owner of British Gas, is plotting an offer worth up to $600m (£305m) for a clutch of North Sea gasfields owned by Shell and Exxon Mobil.

Sam Laidlaw, the Centrica chief executive, plans to spend at least £1 billion a year over the next few years buying gasfields to supply its customers.

In particular, the utility giant is thought to be eyeing an offer for the Nogat fields, which were put up for sale late last year.

The move is part of the group’s plans to cut its dependence on buying gas from the wholesale market, where prices have fluctuated wildly in recent months. read more

The Halifax Herald: Fossil fuel costs to grow

Sun. Feb 24 – 4:46 AM

THE WORLD still has plenty of oil. What humanity is running out of is cheap oil.

That fact’s unlikely to change, ever. Which means that historically high costs for crude oil – and, by extension, more expensive prices at the gas pumps – are here to stay.

There will, however, always be fluctuations. The latest, rapid rise in oil prices, up from less than $90 US a barrel in early February to more than $100 US a barrel last week, is a perfect example. What drove the increase? Paradoxically, some of the same fears that temporarily drove prices down. read more

Acknowledging that she’s counting on Texas to turn the tide in her bid for president, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton urged an enthusiastic crowd of Houstonians late Saturday to make their voices heard in the Democratic primary.

“This is the most important election in your lifetime,” Clinton told the crowd of more than 500.

Clinton was joined by U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Houston, and several other politicians at the Solutions for America speech at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers union hall — a last-minute addition to her whirlwind tour of Texas. Chelsea Clinton, who turns 28 Wednesday, accompanied her mom to the Houston event. read more

MarketOracle.co.uk: Energy Sector Peak Oil Trends Paint ‘A Very Alarming Picture’

Feb 23, 2008 – 05:16 PM
By: Joseph Dancy

While energy demand may be tempered by a slowdown in global economic growth, longer term growing energy demands and supply constraints will continue to present incredible challenges. Much more capital will need to be allocated to the sector to address supply issues, which should create opportunities for investors. We noted the following developments in the energy sector last month:

The concept of ‘peak oil’ has been derided by the big oil companies for years, but last week the chief executive of the oil giant Royal Dutch Shell, Jeroen van der Veer, released a study forecasting the end of easy oil. Dr. Jim Buckee, retired president and chief executive of major independent Talisman Energy, claims he was not surprised that Royal Dutch Shell admitted oil supplies were getting tighter. Dr. Buckee says ‘peak oil’ is either here, or very close. “It is the underlying decline of the world’s major fields that is the dominant driving factor here,” he said. read more

The Observer: UK lags behind on eco energy

The British government says it is committed to renewable energy and has signed up to the latest EU generation target for 2020 – but countries across the world are doing better. Tim Webb explains how lack of investment is holding us back

Almost two years ago, cranes loaded three red ‘Pelamis’ wave machines – named after a species of sea snake – on to container ships in the Orkneys. Their destination: the coast of Portugal. Nothing could be more symbolic of how the UK has fallen behind in the race to embrace renewable energy. read more

David Smith in Basra
Sunday February 24 2008

Western oil giants are poised to enter southern Iraq to tap the country’s vast reserves, despite the ongoing threat of violence, according to Gordon Brown’s business emissary to the country.

Michael Wareing, who heads the new Basra Development Commission, acknowledged that there would be concerns among Iraqis about multinationals exploiting natural resources. read more
