Times of Oman: Shell Oman cares for its customers

Times of Oman: Shell Oman cares for its customers

Sunday, September 12, 2004

SHELL Oman Marketing Company is setting standards in customer service. In an online chat hosted by ChamberOman.com, Irshad Lawati, MD, Shell Oman Marketing Company said customer service and satisfaction is important to Shell for two reasons — Shell cares for their brand, and there is intense competition in the oil industry in Oman.

Each player in the oil industry comes up with an innovative and exclusive idea for enhanced customer satisfaction and Shell has been a step ahead of its competitors in the aspect of building brand loyalty by offering value added service to its customers. read more

TellShell: Should Shell sue The Independent newspaper for libel?

TellShell: Should Shell sue The Independent newspaper for libel?

By Alfred Donovan

Posted 12 Sept 04

I have no wish to monopolise the TellShell forum, but I really must comment on the news report by The Independent newspaper (11 Sept 04) that Shell gave $500,000 towards the cost of the lavish Royal wedding in Brunei. The report states: “The Asian wing of Royal Dutch Shell allegedly bunged in 500,000 Brunei dollars (about pounds 160,000).” The $500,000 gift has also been reported in other newspapers.

“Bunged” of course implies backhander, sweetener, kickback or bribe. If the news report is erroneous and Shell has not in fact “bunged in $500,000” towards the costs of the Royal marriage, will Shell be suing The Independent for libel? read more

FROM OUR AUGUST 2004 SHELL NEWS ARCHIVE

The Observer: Environmentalist fury over oil spill at Shell pipeline site

“Shell’s £6 billion Sakhalin oil pipeline has not even been built yet, but it has already caused a damaging oil slick that has enraged environmentalists and could force potential lenders to pull funds.”: “Refusal to support the project would be a severe embarrassment for Shell.”

Shell’s £6 billion Sakhalin oil pipeline has not even been built yet, but it has already caused a damaging oil slick that has enraged environmentalists and could force potential lenders to pull funds.

Pictures taken by the consortium building the pipeline (in which Shell is a majority shareholder) and passed on to The Observer have upset environmentalists, who are furious that it took a response team nine hours to get to the scene. The delay was confirmed by the Sakhalin consortium. read more

The Independent: Shell sale poised to set record

“Analysts say that Shell would use the proceeds to invest in its upstream operations, in particular to boost its flagging oil and gas reserves.”

Private equity firms ready to splash out for €6bn plastics venture. Tim Webb reports

The sale by Shell and BASF of their €6bn (£4.1bn) plastics joint venture is set to turn into Europe’s largest private equity deal to date.

Bankers expect private equity groups to figure prominently in the auction for Basell. The sale, one of the biggest ever seen in the chemicals industry, is being formally launched this week. Trade buyers could face competition issues, making a private equity buyout more likely, industry sources said. read more

Can Shell survive reserves affair?

FROM OUR AUGUST 2005 SHELL NEWS ARCHIVE

PRWeek.com: News Analysis: Can Shell survive reserves affair?

Last week, the FSA imposed the largest fine in its history on Shell for market abuse over the oil reserves scandal. A Shell PR veteran traces the firm’s reputational demise.: “the reputation of Shell has been destroyed by hypocrisy, mendacity and deceit. Whether we will ever be able to be ‘sure of Shell’ again is very doubtful indeed.”

In 1997, advertising legend Maurice Saatchi was called in by the Royal Dutch/Shell Group to help it improve its image. Saatchi produced a number of adman slogans – but among all the hyperbole he said one very wise thing: ‘No communication can work effectively unless backed by real action.’

The years that followed Saatchi’s brief involvement with Shell were characterised by a plethora of comms initiatives – but also by actions at the top that have mortally wounded its reputation. read more

Buccaneer who struck black gold

The Business: Buccaneer who struck black gold

“Two years ago, Cairn bought out Shell completely for £4m and kept drilling.”: “Cairn kept going where the mighty Shell gave up”: “Cairn has a market capitalisation of £2bn, compared with £6m when Gammell founded the company in 1980.”

The former Scottish rugby star who founded Cairn Energy is now in the scrum with oil giants

NOW here’s a question. Which British businessman is a close friend of Tony Blair and President Bush? Here’s a clue. Blair opened his company’s new head office in Edinburgh, and Bush, as a young boy, used to holiday on the family’s Scottish farm. Time’s up.

It’s Bill Gammell, founder and chairman of Cairn Energy, the new hotshot of the oil industry. It is said that when the oil markets descend into crisis – as they have recently- Blair and Bush ring Gammell’s office, with its glorious views of Edinburgh Castle, where labouring inside is the tall, thin figure of Gammell, a former Scotland rugby international. read more

Total feels no need to deal

The Business: Total feels no need to deal

“tipped to merge Royal Dutch/Shell out of its misery.”: “But since merger heat began to build around the company, Total’s executives have worked hard to dampen it.”

By Richard Orange

12 Sept 04

UNTIL BP’s move into Russia, Thierry Desmarest, chief executive of French oil giant Total, had matched the British giant deal-for-deal through the late 1990s frenzy of oil industry mergers. Its takeovers of Belgium’s Petrofina and France’s Elf were a Gallic mirroring of Lord Browne’s acquisitions of US companies Arco and Amoco.

On the face of it, Desmarest is now in the perfect position to catch up with BP. High oil prices are generating surplus cashflows and Total is sitting on a 13% stake in French pharmaceuticals company Sanofi-Adventis that could net it (€12bn $ 14.6bn, £8.2bn) when sold. It also plans to float much of its chemicals business. read more
