Royal Dutch Shell Plc received U.S. approval to disturb marine mammals as part of its plan to resume oil exploration off Alaska’s Arctic coast.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued an “incidental harassment authorization,” which allows noise from air guns, icebreaking, drilling and anchor handling. The June 12 permit, which covers July through October, doesn’t allow Shell to injure or kill any marine life.
Shell earlier received general approval for oil exploration for the coming months from the Department of Interior. The Hague-based company still must get a specific drilling plan from Interior’s offshore regulator, and work around ice flows and other vagaries of being 70 miles offshore Alaska in the Chukchi Sea. read more

EXTRACTS
For investors in Shell the last year has been particularly tough. The declining oil price has hit its profitability and investor sentiment very hard, with Shell’s share price falling by 24% during the period, while the outlook for ‘black gold’ remains highly uncertain.
While Shell’s financial performance is significantly dependent upon the price of oil, which it cannot control, British American Tobacco’s bottom line is exceptionally stable. read more

SEATTLE — The U.S. Coast Guard says it has detained two dozen protesters who tried to block Royal Dutch Shell’s drill rig as it left Seattle on its way to explore for oil in the Arctic Ocean.

Shell gets go-ahead for Shelburne Basin drilling project
SHERRI BORDEN COLLEY STAFF REPORTER: June 15, 2015
Shell Canada has received the green light to begin exploratory drilling off the coast of Nova Scotia later this year.
The project cleared its final regulatory hurdle late Monday when federal Environment Minister Leona Aglukkaq gave the company conditional approval.
In a news release, Aglukkaq ruled the project won’t have a major impact on the environment.
“We are pleased that the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency issued its environmental decision statements on the Shelburne Basin Venture Exploration Drilling Project,” Larry Lalonde, spokesman for Shell Canada Ltd., said in an interview Monday night. read more

Shell gets environmental ok for Canada offshore drilling project
Markets | Mon Jun 15, 2015
Canada’s environment ministry on Monday said it had approved an East Coast offshore drilling project led by Royal Dutch Shell Plc, saying the exploration project was “not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.”
The approval is contingent on the company meeting numerous conditions, including mitigating the potential impact on fish and marine habitats, among other things, the government said in a statement.
The Shelburne Basin Venture Exploration Drilling project, which is operated by Shell, consists of up to seven exploration wells located some 250 kilometers (155 miles) off the coast of the province of Nova Scotia, on Canada’s East Coast. read more

We Must Stop Shell Oil

Jane Fonda Activist, advocate and actress
I’ve been in Vancouver for two days where I joined with Greenpeace activists, First Nations peoples, parents, grandparents, professors, students at an amazing 6-hour “Toast The Coast” rally on Jericho Beach to celebrate the pristine beauty of the Northwest coastline and to stop Big Oil from devastating it: Shell’s preparing to drill in Alaska, new pipelines are proposed to bring tar sand oil to the coast, more oil-carrying super tankers running up and down the coast. Remember Exxon Valdez? read more
