Shell facing stiff Seattle opposition

SEATTLE, May 15 (UPI) — Though Shell may drill in Alaska’s arctic waters no matter how many protests are held, a Seattle organizer said the company can be cast in a bad light.

Seattle organizers are planning weekend protests against Shell’s use of a port terminal for drilling rigs bound for the Chukchi Sea off the coast of Alaska. Emily Johnston, a spokeswoman for advocacy group 350 Seattle, said in response to email questions port consideration for Shell was offensive.

“We probably can’t stop them from getting to Alaska this summer, but we can make sure they don’t get to make such catastrophic decisions in quiescent business-as-usual conditions,” she said. “We’ll shine a bright light on exactly how bad an actor they are.” read more

ARCTIC ALARM BELLS: SHELL KICKS OUT 60 WORKERS IN HOLLAND FOR DRUG USE

Screen Shot 2015-05-15 at 20.27.32By John Donovan

Royal Dutch Shell has expelled 60 workers from a Dutch chemical plant after workers were caught using drugs.

The Shell Moerdijk plant in the Netherlands makes chemical products from petroleum. It employs over 800 employees and over 500 contractors. It is one of the largest chemical complexes in Europe.

Last October I reported a steam leak at the plant which resulted in flaring activity and a declaration of force majeure by Shell.

Today comes news of widespread drug use by workers at the plant.

Imagine the potential consequences if Shell workers in the Arctic drilling campaign had a similar problem. Perhaps they did in 2012. It would explain a lot. read more

Obama: Shell developed high safeguards against Arctic spills

CAMP DAVID, Md. (AP) — President Barack Obama says experts have concluded that Royal Dutch Shell has developed strong safeguards to undertake offshore oil exploration in Arctic waters.

Obama says his administration delayed Shell’s application for exploratory drilling in the Chukchi Sea northwest of Alaska until it could provide necessary assurances. The federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management approved the company’s plan Monday after reviewing thousands of comments from the public, Alaska Native organizations, and state and federal agencies. read more

Seattle, like it or not, becomes Shell’s Arctic base

The arrival in Seattle Thursday of an oil rig Royal Dutch Shell is outfitting for oil exploration in the remote Arctic Ocean marks a pivotal moment for an environmental movement increasingly mobilized around climate change.

Activists paddling out in kayaks to meet the rig off Seattle’s picturesque waterfront said it’s their moment to stand against opening a new frontier of fossil fuel exploration.

“Unless people get out there and put themselves on the front lines and say enough is enough, than nothing will ever change,” said Jordan Van Voast, 55, an acupuncturist who was going out on the water to confront the Polar Pioneer. “I’m hopeful that people are waking up.” read more

SEATTLE—Despite protests by environmentalists in kayaks and opposition from the city of Seattle, a 400-foot-long Arctic oil drilling rig has docked at a Seattle terminal.

Tugs brought the Polar Pioneer drilling rig into Seattle waters Thursday afternoon and it was moored at Terminal 5 by 5 p.m.

Coast Guard Lt. Dana Warr said about 30 kayaks and other vessels turned out to meet the rig. He said there were no arrests.

The first of two Royal Dutch Shell drilling rigs slated for Arctic oil exploration arrived in Seattle on Thursday as environmental activists geared up for days of protests over plans to store the equipment at the city’s port.

Shell is planning to use Seattle as a base to store and maintain the rigs and other equipment as it resumes exploration and drilling this summer in the Chukchi Sea off Alaska, where it has not drilled since a mishap-filled 2012 season. read more
