By MARK THIESSEN, Associated Press: 11 May 2015

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Just days ahead of a planned protest of Royal Dutch Shell’s Arctic drilling program in Seattle, the company on Monday cleared a major bureaucratic hurdle to drill off Alaska’s northwestern coast.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management approved the multi-year exploration plan in the Chukchi Sea for Shell after reviewing thousands of comments from the public, Alaska Native organizations and state and federal agencies. read more

Monday, 11 May 2015

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) expects oil prices to be about $76 a barrel in 2025 in its most optimistic scenario, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing a draft of the cartel’s latest strategy report.

OPEC does not expect oil prices to consistently trade at $100 barrel again in the next decade, an assessment that has the group considering the return of production limits, the Journal said.

Oil slipped towards $65 a barrel on Monday as signs that U.S. shale oil production was recovering after a recent price rally renewed concerns of a growing global supply glut. read more

Not going green: Obama administration allows Shell to pursue Arctic drilling

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) – Royal Dutch Shell cleared a major hurdle Monday in its plans to drill off Alaska’s northwest coast.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management approved Shell’s exploration plan for the Chukchi Sea.

However, this isn’t the final step that Shell needs for Arctic drilling.

Shell still must obtain other permits from state and federal agencies, including one to drill from the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement and government opinions that find Shell can comply with terms and conditions of the Endangered Species Act. read more

White House Gives Conditional Approval for Shell to Drill in Arctic

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration gave conditional approval on Monday to allow Shell Gulf of Mexico, Inc. to start drilling for oil and gas in the Arctic Ocean this summer.

The approval is a major victory for Shell and the rest of the petroleum industry, which has sought for years to drill in the remote waters of the Chukchi seas, which are believed to hold vast reserves of oil and gas.

“We have taken a thoughtful approach to carefully considering potential exploration in the Chukchi Sea, recognizing the significant environmental, social and ecological resources in the region and establishing high standards for the protection of this critical ecosystem, our Arctic communities, and the subsistence needs and cultural traditions of Alaska Natives,” Abigail Ross Hopper, director of the Interior Department’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management said in a statement. “As we move forward, any offshore exploratory activities will continue to be subject to rigorous safety standards.” read more

CALGARY, Alberta, May 11 (Reuters) – Shell Trading Canada, a unit of Royal Dutch Shell (Xetra: R6C1.DEnews) , will take over the task of marketing nearly all the barrels of crude oil that the province of Alberta receives from producers as royalties.

From June 1, Shell (LSE: RDSB.Lnews) will market 90 percent of the nearly 70,000 barrels per day of conventional crude that Alberta takes in lieu of cash royalties, according to a statement on the Alberta Petroleum Marketing Commission (APMC) website. read more

Royal Dutch Shell plc (ADR) (NYSE:RDS.A) is reconsidering drilling in the Chukchi Sea in Alaska. Drilling in Alaska is considered a dangerous job as temperature levels are low and the topography of the region would make it difficult to contain an oil spill if it were to occur. The crude oil supply glut created by the US has caused oil prices to plummet by more than 50% in the second half of the last year. In addition, the costs of production of operating in the region are high, making it a challenge for any company to operate in the region. read more

Grabbing Paddles in Seattle to Ward Off an Oil Giant

Screen Shot 2015-05-11 at 12.10.09

By KIRK JOHNSON MAY 11, 2015

SEATTLE — A dozen or so men and women, cinched into life jackets, paddles at the ready, were about to launch their kayaks into Elliott Bay early Thursday evening with Seattle’s glittering skyline as the backdrop. For some of the paddlers, it was a first-time experience, and with the water at 50 degrees and choppy, there were some obvious signs of trepidation.

“O.K., what hazards are we watching for?” Elizabeth Chiaravalli, their instructor, shouted, and a smattering of answers immediately bounced back. “The waves!” “The dock!” “The pilings!” read more

IRELAND: 1100 People Call on EPA not to Grant Shell Emissions Licence

Screen Shot 2014-06-18 at 18.07.08

News Release – Issued by Shell to Sea – May 11th, 2015 – For immediate release

Last week 1100 people signed a petition calling on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to reject Shell’s application for an Industrial Emissions Licence for the Shell/Corrib Gas refinery at Bellanaboy, Co Mayo. They have also called for an oral hearing to be held into the application. The petition was started by the Shell to Sea campaign and was hosted by the “Avaaz” community petitions website. [1]

Shell are currently unable to operate the Bellanaboy refinery as their earlier Emissions Licence was quashed by the High Court last year.  Martin Harrington successfully took the challenge on the basis that the EPA was wrong in granting Shell an Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) licence before undertaking an Environmental Impact Assessment.
