Three people have been arrested close to the Corrib gas project site in Glengad, north Mayo.
Gardaí say the two women and a man, all in their 20s, were arrested after the road to Broadhaven Bay, which is a short distance from the Rossport Solidarity Camp, was blocked.
The three Shell to Sea protestors are being held on public order offences.
The world’s largest pipe-laying ship, the Solitaire, arrived in Mayo late on Thursday to begin work on the gas project.
An additional 300 gardaí were deployed in the Broadhaven Bay area because of concerns the ship’s arrival would spark local protests.
The Solitaire, which is being protected by two Irish Navy vessels, is to begin laying the offshore pipeline that will connect the landfall installation at Glengad with the gas field 83km away.

Deterding was an honored associate and supporter of Hitler and a personal friend of Goring.
Deterding was the guest of Hitler during a four day summit meeting at Berchtesgaden. Sir Henri and Hitler both had ambitions on Russian oil fields. Only an honored personal guest would be rewarded with a private four day meeting at Hitler’s mountain top retreat.
