Shell starts gas exploration in Skåne

Global energy giant Shell has launched a three-year exploration project to find natural gas reserves in Skåne.

The UK-Dutch company has begun using mineral exploitation licenses in two areas of Skåne – Colonussänkan, stretching across the county from southeast to northwest, and Höllvikengraven in the far southwest close to Malmö and Trelleborg.

Shell said the project was part of a global initiative to step up its search for new energy sources.

“Skåne’s bedrock was identified as a likely source for natural gas,” the company said. “The three-year exploration license will allow us to physically examine the subsurface and confirm or reject [our] theoretical assumptions.”

Shell said it was confident of finding natural gas reserves but said only time would tell if they will prove sufficiently large to warrant commercial extraction.

It stressed that the project would operate on an environmentally, socially and economically sound basis.

“We will minimize any impact on the environment and the local surrounding by using the newest available technology,” the company said.

Shell media spokesman Martin von Arronet said the initial phase would involve a seismic survey, followed by test drilling in summer 2009.

The company said natural gas was a clean burning fuel with lower environmental impacts compared to other fossil alternatives such as coal and oil.

“According to the International Energy Agency, globally energy use could more than double by 2050. For the next 40 years, renewable energy sources alone cannot meet the western world’s estimated energy need,” Shell added.
