Small businesses with pioneering ideas to combat climate change are being offered the chance to win awards of up to £40K from Shell.

Shell Springboard LogoThe Shell Springboard programme, now in its fourth year, will give six awards of between twenty and forty thousand pounds to SMEs in each of three UK regions – Scotland and Northern Ireland; northern and central England; and Wales and southern England.

Businesses wishing to apply must have been established for at least three months, have fewer than 250 employees and be set up either as a sole–trader, partnership, limited company or community–interest company. To convince the judging panel, ideas must be innovative, lead to greenhouse gas reductions and be commercially viable. Shell UK chairman James Smith said;

“SMEs are a vibrant and creative sector of the economy, so they’re ideally placed to be climate change entrepreneurs. Shell’s scenario planning suggests that in the future we will be reliant on a mix of a number of different energy sources and energy–saving technologies.

“Grass roots innovation from small businesses could be a crucial factor in driving the development of this mix,” he continued. “I’d urge SMEs operating in this field to give serious consideration to the Springboard programme.”

Last year’s winners included Dr Paula Carey of Carbon8, a company which turns everyday rubbish from landfill sites into building materials. Carey believes winning the award helped her to secure a partnership with Kent County Council to create a pilot project on a local landfill site.

“Programmes like Shell Springboard encourage small and medium–sized businesses to seize the issue of climate change as a commercial opportunity that should be embraced,” she said.

The deadline for entries is 7th November. Businesses that have previously applied for the fund but were unsuccessful are eligible to re–apply.

If you have an innovate business idea to combat climate change then you can find more information about the awards and apply online at Shell Springboard.
