oilandgasnewsonline.com: Biofuels will not solve energy issue
Volume: 25, No. 17 April 28 – May 4, 2008
ROME:
Biofuels will not solve the world’s energy problem, the chief executive of Royal Dutch Shell said, amid growing criticism of their environmental and social benefits.
The remarks follow protests in Brazil and Europe against fuels derived from food crops. Food shortages and rising costs have set off rioting and protests in countries including Haiti, Cameroon, Niger and Indonesia.
“The essential point of biofuels is over time they will play a role,” Jeroen van der Veer, chief executive of Royal Dutch Shell, told reporters on the sidelines of the International Energy Forum. “But there are high expectations what role they will play in the short term.”
The oil minister for Qatar, a member of the Organidsation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, had harsher words to say about biofuels at the energy forum, a gathering of producers and consumers.
“Now the world is facing a shortage of food,” Qatar’s Abdullah al-Attiyah said, answering a question at a news conference. “I don’t think we should blame oil, we should blame biofuels.”
Biofuels are set to play a growing role. The European Union agreed last year to get 10 per cent of all transport fuel from biofuels by 2020 to help fight climate change.

Shell had a close relationship with the Nazis during and after the reign of Sir Henri Deterding, an ardent Nazi, and the founder and decades long leader of the Royal Dutch Shell Group. His burial ceremony, which had all the trappings of a state funeral, was held at his private estate in Mecklenburg, Germany. The spectacle (photographs below) included a funeral procession led by a horse drawn funeral hearse with senior Nazis officials and senior Royal Dutch Shell directors in attendance, Nazi salutes at the graveside, swastika banners on display and wreaths and personal tributes from Adolf Hitler and Reichsmarschall, Hermann Goring. Deterding was an honored associate and supporter of Hitler and a personal friend of Goring.
Deterding was the guest of Hitler during a four day summit meeting at Berchtesgaden. Sir Henri and Hitler both had ambitions on Russian oil fields. Only an honored personal guest would be rewarded with a private four day meeting at Hitler’s mountain top retreat.

IN JULY 2007, MR BILL CAMPBELL (ABOVE, A RETIRED GROUP AUDITOR OF SHELL INTERNATIONAL SENT AN EMAIL TO EVERY UK MP AND MEMBER OF THE HOUSE OF LORDS:
