Shell Sees Three Hard Truths for the Future

U.S.News & World Report: Shell Sees Three Hard Truths for the Future

April 14, 2008 11:34 AM ET

Shell, which for 40 years has been writing future scenarios as a way of grappling with the forces shaping its industry, already has gotten a great deal of attention for its latest set—the first time the giant oil company has concluded that there actually is a preferred course. The scenarios are called “Scramble” and “Blueprints,” and they suggest that from looking at current global dynamics, nations will either be fighting each other for dwindling resources or will chart a course for international cooperation on energy and climate. read more

Email from Ireland concerning Shell Corrib Gas Project

By John Donovan

Hostility by the local population to the Shell Corrib Gas Project in Ireland continues. As the operators of a well known website www.royaldutchshellplc.com -focussed on the global activities of the Royal Dutch Shell Group, we recently received an eloquent appeal for help. The content of the email is self-explanatory.

THE EMAIL

Dear Mr John Donovan and to your father also,

I was not aware of your existence until today.  It is great to see that 2 men can be a real force, threat and thorn in the side of the conscienceless giant S=HELL (I’m calling it this because that is what Shell means = HELL to all those receiving communities like Erris). read more

4/14/08

THE QUIET VISIT by Shell Oil President John Hofmeister to four remote Alaska communities this winter is yet another indication that the energy giant is serious about developing oil and gas leases in northern offshore waters.

Hofmeister’s visits to Wainwright, Nuiqsut, Point Lay and Barrow took place in February and became public this week. Shell, the energy giant, has years of experience and great expertise in offshore operations. It is a major leaseholder in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas, holds leases from a 2005  federal sale in the North Aleutian Basin area of Bristol Bay, and has indicated interest in other prospective oil and gas basins off Alaska. read more

The Hartford Courant (Connecticut): Gas Plant Plan’s Defeat Could Prove Costly To Consumers

By MARK PETERS | Courant Staff Writer
April 13, 2008

State political leaders celebrated when a proposal to build a huge liquefied natural gas terminal in Long Island Sound suffered a stinging defeat last week.

Whether consumers weary of high energy prices might agree depends on whether New Jersey, Massachusetts and Maine allow alternatives that can take the place of Broadwater Energy’s plan for the Sound. read more

Dollar Alarm

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL: Dollar Alarm

April 14, 2008; Page A14

Awakening from their long slumber, the G-7 finance ministers have finally admitted that a global run on the dollar is a bad idea. The currency markets will no doubt begin testing immediately to see if they mean it.

At their weekend meetings in Washington, the G-7 ministers dropped their long neglect of the dollar and noted that “Since our last meeting, there have been at times sharp fluctuations in major currencies, and we are concerned about their possible implications for economic and financial stability. We continue to monitor exchange rates closely, and cooperate as appropriate.” Translation: We don’t want the dollar to keep falling, and speculators might get burned if they bet on further dollar declines. read more

redOrbit: Shell Improves Fuel Economy

By Hezeri Samsuri

BEFORE you splurge your money on equipment that claims to give better fuel economy to your car, Shell has proven again that changing your driving habits can help you save.

In fact, you can easily save up to 10 per cent or more in fuel economy.

According to Datuk Mohzani Abdul Wahab, managing director of Shell Trading (M) Sdn Bhd, the company has been campaigning about fuel economy for the past 70 years.

Examples of such campaigns are the Fuel Economy Guinness World of Records (where the Taylor couple went around the world in just 24 tanks of Shell fuel), New Shell Fuel Economy Formula (the introduction of Synthetic Viscous Friction Improver in Shell’s petrol), the Shell one-tank challenge (a drive from Kuala Lumpur to Penang and back in one tank) and the Global Drivers and Fuel Economy Report (a survey done in various countries around the world to study driving habits and fuel economy perceptions). read more

Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC)’s long-term future in Nigeria is now in doubt as the company is facing pressure from the government amidst increasingly violent opposition in the Niger Delta.

Sources say the Federal Government has withheld up to $1bn as part of a production-sharing agreement while the two sides are locked in talks over how to pay for new investments in the oil industry. The decision to withhold funds is preventing contractors from getting paid, say sources. read more
