Although KKR and Technip have held talks with Expro’s management, it is not known whether they have been given access to the company’s books or how advanced their interest is. read more

N.Y. governor says no to Shell Broadwater project

Yale Daily News: N.Y. governor says no to Broadwater

Two energy companies’ bid to construct a liquefied-natural-gas terminal in the Long Island Sound effectively died Thursday as New York Gov. David Paterson announced he would not back the project because it violates a state environmental regulation.

At a press conference held on the shore of the Sound, Paterson said the project, which “did not pass the test” for a environmentally stable Long Island Sound, violates New York’s Coastal Zone Management Act. Paterson’s ruling, which came two days before the deadline set for New York by the federal government, follows a decision three weeks ago by the Federal Energy Regulation Committee to allow the terminal to go forward. read more

War Plans

THE NEW YORK TIMES: War Plans

By NIALL FERGUSON
Published: April 13, 2008

The age of “Atlantic man” is conventionally thought to be over. Some, like Parag Khanna, foresee the rise of a “second world” to challenge American hegemony. Others, notably Fareed Zakaria, are harbingers of a “post-American world.” The rapid economic rise of China (and India) suggests to many that the geopolitical center of gravity no longer lies somewhere between Washington and London. The embarrassments of the Anglo-American “special relationship” in Iraq have encouraged others (myself among them) to predict a decline of American empire. read more

Futures Rise 3 Cents
After Strong Gains;
A Drop in Demand?
By GREGORY MEYER
April 12, 2008; Page B5

Crude-oil futures stalled after a week of strong gains, closing flat as economic-growth concerns weighed on the market.

Light, sweet crude for May delivery settled up three cents at $110.14 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Early in the day, the International Energy Agency cut its oil-demand growth forecast by 460,000 barrels a day, the biggest downward revision in seven years. The energy watchdog for the most industrial countries now sees global oil demand increasing by 1.3 million barrels a day to 87.2 million barrels a day.

The IEA report was followed by data showing U.S. consumer confidence plunged to a 26-year low in mid-April, largely thanks to high food and fuel prices. General Electric Co. also reported disappointing earnings, body-slamming the stock market. read more

The Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries has quietly begun to reduce its oil production despite calls from the US and Europe for the group to pump more so that prices fall.

Output from the core countries of the 13-member cartel last month fell to 27.3m barrels a day, down from the 27.6m b/d they produced in February and 27.8m b/d in January, the International Energy Agency, the western countries’ watchdog, said on Friday in its monthly report. read more
