SALYM, Khanty-Mansiisk Autonomous District — With state pressure and ownership shakeups increasingly a fact of life, times are turbulent for foreign oil majors working in the country.

Yet Oleg Myakinin, newly appointed production manager at Salym, a 50-50 venture between Shell and Sibir Energy, sees his medium-sized western Siberian field as proof that foreign firms still have an important role to play. read more

Reuters: Growing world needs every form of energy: Shell

Sun Apr 20, 2008 9:03am EDT

ROME (Reuters) – The world will need every form of energy available — from coal to biofuels — to keep pace with a booming population, the chief executive of Royal Dutch Shell said on Sunday.

Jeroen van der Veer also said record oil prices, which hit $117 a barrel on Friday, had yet to curb the thirst for fuel.

“… Despite high prices, demand is not dropping, there is only slower growth. Easy oil and easy gas cannot supply all that surge in demand,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the International Energy Forum. read more

ROME (Reuters) – Biofuels will not solve the world’s energy problem, the chief executive of Royal Dutch Shell said on Sunday, amid growing criticism of their environmental and social benefits.

The remarks follow protests in Brazil and Europe against fuels derived from food crops. Food shortages and rising costs have set off rioting and protests in countries including Haiti, Cameroon, Niger and Indonesia. read more

Russian oil drop may be inflating prices

The Sunday Business Post: Russian oil drop may be inflating prices

20 April 2008 By Philip Andrews in Moscow

The International Energy Agency has hinted that a 1 per cent drop in Russian output in the first quarter of 2008 is contributing to record oil prices. This is the first time in ten years that Russian production will have fallen.

Analysts say the fall may be anomalous, due simply to high taxes and inadequate reinvestment. Russia is the world’s second-biggest producer of crude oil and one of its main exporters, with reserves of about 40 billion tons, of which 25 billion are on its continental shelf. read more

Pursuing the polluters: An environmental suit may open the door for small countries to take on the multinationals

Los Angeles Times: Pursuing the polluters

An environmental suit may open the door for small countries to take on the multinationals.

On March 29, 1967, Texaco struck oil deep in Sucimbios province in the northeast corner of Ecuador. The oil company christened the gusher Lago Agrio No. 1 (Spanish for “Sour Lake”) after Texaco’s first major oil strike in Texas in 1903. The name would prove to be ironic.

In partnership with Petroecuador, Ecuador’s national oil company, Texaco ramped up production at the site, which eventually grew to more than 220,000 barrels a day. From 1972 to 1992, the oil fields of Sucimbios produced more than 1.7 billion barrels of oil — much of it exported to the U.S. Most of that oil around Lago Agrio No. 1 is gone. But what remains from the oil-boom years is almost incomprehensible pollution. read more

Energy producers in driving seat at Rome talks

interactive investor: Energy producers in driving seat at Rome talks

Sun 20 Apr, 2008 10:59

By Alex Lawler and Peg Mackey

ROME (Reuters) – Consumer countries and international oil firms keen to gain greater access to the world’s energy resources are likely to walk away empty-handed from talks with producer nations in Rome.

Record high oil, which struck $117 a barrel on Friday, has helped to drive up the profits of oil majors, but it has also increased the spending power of national oil companies and made them ever more reluctant to grant access to their resources. read more

Ethanol Folly: We’re Using Food For Fuel

The Hartford Courant: Ethanol Folly: We’re Using Food For Fuel

By DAVID A. RIDENOUR
April 20, 2008

Move over, “Bridge to Nowhere,” there’s a new poster child of congressional waste and avarice — ethanol, the “Fuel to Nowhere.” Ethanol leads only to higher food prices and greater greenhouse gas emissions.

Any time Congress can find an excuse for shoveling out billions of dollars in pork, it’s a safe bet there’ll be a stampede of Democrats and Republicans to vote “Aye.” Such has been the case with ethanol ever since Congress latched onto the idea that it could be sold as a means of cutting greenhouse-gas emissions. read more

Bloomberg: Oil Majors Must Rethink Business to Survive, Eni Says (Update1)

By Maher Chmaytelli and Anthony DiPaola

April 20 (Bloomberg) — International oil companies must improve their technological expertise to survive a trend of increasing nationalism among nations owning energy resources, Eni SpA Chief Executive Officer Paolo Scaroni said.

“They need to profoundly rethink their business model in order to survive and prosper in the new oil and gas landscape,” he said today in a speech to the International Energy Forum in Rome, attended by Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Iran and other members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. “The relative positions of international energy companies and national energy companies are changing, and not in our favor.” read more

Shell, Exxon Face Higher Oil Production Costs on Carbon Limits

Bloomberg: Shell, Exxon Face Higher Oil Production Costs on Carbon Limits

By Fred Pals

April 20 (Bloomberg) — Royal Dutch Shell Plc, Exxon Mobil Corp. and the rest of the oil industry may face higher costs to exploit Canada’s tar sands, the biggest deposit outside of Saudi Arabia, because of efforts to rein in climate change.

A Canadian mandate to bury carbon dioxide when producing the oil may add between $2 and $13 a barrel to the cost of production, according to Pembina, an Alberta-based environmental group. Mining crude from the area now costs around $60 a barrel. read more

The U.S. Air Force used the Fox Three gravel airstrip on Canada’s Baffin Island to monitor Arctic skies for Soviet bombers during the Cold War. Today, Ken Leigh flies ore samples from the site as his company prospects for gold on land that’s freer of ice because of global warming.

“There are parts that haven’t been explored,” says Leigh, chief executive officer of Vancouver-based Commander Resources, referring to the Canadian territory Nunavut, which includes the island. “The frontier is opening up.” read more
