The record oil price will help BP and Royal Dutch Shell post bumper first-quarter profits tomorrow amid growing concerns about how consumers and businesses will cope with the soaring cost of fuel.
City analysts expect BP and Shell to report quarterly profits of more than £2.5bn each. Brokers are forecasting that Shell will unveil earnings of around $6.7bn (£3.4bn), while rival BP is expected to reveal slightly smaller profits of $5.2bn (£2.6bn).
However, the record oil price will also hit profits at BP and Shell’s refining businesses.
“Companies with US exposure (such as BP and Shell) will be most impacted by the significantly softer refining environment,” said Jon Rigby, an analyst at UBS.
Kate Gibbs, a spokesman for the Road Haulage Association, claimed that BP and Shell’s massive profits would “rub salt in the wounds” of the trucking industry.
“These profits are mind-boggling when you think of road hauliers who are struggling to deal with the Government’s proposed 2p per litre fuel duty rise,” she added.
“A lot of companies will go out of business if the 2p rise goes through.”

Royal Dutch Shell conspired directly with Hitler, financed the Nazi Party, was anti-Semitic and sold out its own Dutch Jewish employees to the Nazis. Shell had a close relationship with the Nazis during and after the reign of Sir Henri Deterding, an ardent Nazi, and the founder and decades long leader of the Royal Dutch Shell Group. His burial ceremony, which had all the trappings of a state funeral, was held at his private estate in Mecklenburg, Germany. The spectacle (photographs below) included a funeral procession led by a horse drawn funeral hearse with senior Nazis officials and senior Royal Dutch Shell directors in attendance, Nazi salutes at the graveside, swastika banners on display and wreaths and personal tributes from Adolf Hitler and Reichsmarschall, Hermann Goring. Deterding was an honored associate and supporter of Hitler and a personal friend of Goring.
Deterding was the guest of Hitler during a four day summit meeting at Berchtesgaden. Sir Henri and Hitler both had ambitions on Russian oil fields. Only an honored personal guest would be rewarded with a private four day meeting at Hitler’s mountain top retreat.
