BRANFORD, Conn. — The state of New York must decide this week whether to approve a liquid natural gas terminal proposed for the waters of Long Island Sound.
Connecticut Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz and several concerned citizens said they were prepared to meet with New York’s secretary of state on Tuesday to discuss the plan. Bysiewicz said that she was told that the meeting was cancelled and a decision could be made as soon as Wednesday.
The barge could be floating in Long Island Sound in less than two years and won’t move for decades.
Shell Oil and Transcanada are behind the proposal and claims the project would save money in energy and help the environment.
Connecticut officials, including Gov. Jodi Rell and Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said that the project is a disaster waiting to happen.
“There is no doubt from Madison to Stonington the impact of this facility,” said Rep. Joe Courtney. “If it goes forward it would be devastating to every single one of those communities.”
“Broadwater will be a sitting terrorist target and a disaster waiting to happen,” Blumenthal said.
The proposal was recently approved by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and now only needs New York’s stamp of approval.
Connecticut politicians and grassroots activists are now urging the Empire State to shoot the proposal down.
“Deny approval of the Broadwater project, that’s what we’re asking you to do,” said Rep. Rosa DeLauro. “There’s too much at stake for the people of Connecticut to remain on the sidelines here.”
Blumenthal said that if New York does approve the project, he is prepared to take it to the Supreme Court.
“We will straight jacket Broadwater … so that a safer, saner project can take its place,” he said.
Some alternatives to the project include upgrading natural gas pipelines.

Royal Dutch Shell conspired directly with Hitler, financed the Nazi Party, was anti-Semitic and sold out its own Dutch Jewish employees to the Nazis. Shell had a close relationship with the Nazis during and after the reign of Sir Henri Deterding, an ardent Nazi, and the founder and decades long leader of the Royal Dutch Shell Group. His burial ceremony, which had all the trappings of a state funeral, was held at his private estate in Mecklenburg, Germany. The spectacle (photographs below) included a funeral procession led by a horse drawn funeral hearse with senior Nazis officials and senior Royal Dutch Shell directors in attendance, Nazi salutes at the graveside, swastika banners on display and wreaths and personal tributes from Adolf Hitler and Reichsmarschall, Hermann Goring. Deterding was an honored associate and supporter of Hitler and a personal friend of Goring.
Deterding was the guest of Hitler during a four day summit meeting at Berchtesgaden. Sir Henri and Hitler both had ambitions on Russian oil fields. Only an honored personal guest would be rewarded with a private four day meeting at Hitler’s mountain top retreat.
