Animated Ads Aim to Encourage All Houstonians to Help Keep Buffalo Bayou and the Houston Ship Channel Clean

HOUSTON, March 5, 2008 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) — The next phase of the Clean & Green Port of Houston Program has been launched with a new multi-faceted advertising campaign promoting the environmental initiative. The kick-off took place at a reception in February at the home of PHA Commissioner Elyse Lanier and former Houston Mayor Bob Lanier. The Port of Houston Authority, the Buffalo Bayou Partnership and corporate partner Shell Oil Company sponsor the Clean & Green Port of Houston Program. The ads and promotional items carry the campaign tagline: “Don’t Trash Our Streets. Don’t Trash Our Bayou. Keep Houston Clean & Green.” Nearly 100 guests, Harris County Criminal Court Judges and other supporters of the Clean & Green Port of Houston Program, previewed the new TV ads and promotional items, including a coloring book for area schools.

The campaign entertains and educates Houstonians about the connection between litter on the streets and litter in our bayous and bay. The animated television ads, which will begin airing this month, feature members of the “Clean & Green Critter Club,” fanciful characters based on the real creatures that live in Houston’s bayous and waterways, including a heron, a squirrel, a raccoon, a skunk and a turtle. The characters encourage young people to change their habits when it comes to litter.

Port of Houston Authority, the Buffalo Bayou Partnership and corporate partner Shell Oil Company formally launched the Clean & Green Port of Houston program on September 4, 2007. The initiative uses community service workers through the Harris County Supervision & Corrections Department to clean up trash from Buffalo Bayou’s banks and waterways, five days a week. The program’s year-end goal is to collect more than 10 cubic yards of trash a day — enough to fill 83 garbage trucks.

“This program really demonstrates the success of partnerships,” said PHA Chairman James T. Edmonds. “Harris County criminal judges are a key partner, along with private industry, law enforcement and non-profit groups involved with Buffalo Bayou, in making this program work. It would not have been possible without all our supporters’ assistance, including corporate sponsor Shell Oil Company, Buffalo Bayou Partnership and Constable Victor Trevino and Precinct 6, in particular.”

“This program is so important to the entire region and we’re all proud to be a part of it,” said Commissioner Lanier. “In the same way that ‘Don’t Mess with Texas’ helped clean our state’s roadways, I believe the Clean and Green campaign will change people’s attitudes when it comes to litter in our waterways.” From August 2007 to January 2008, community service workers collected enough litter to fill 40 average-size rear-loading garbage trucks. That is enough litter to fill the playing surface of a basketball arena with five and one-half feet of trash — picture two teams of basketball players, most of whom are shoulder-deep in litter.

The Houston-area storm water drainage system carries street water and debris to curb catch basins that route the runoff through an underground system, which directly empties into the city’s bayous. After a downpour, a tidal wave of trash flows towards the Port of Houston, and ultimately Galveston Bay, causing environmental concerns.

Among speakers at the event were The Hon. Caprice Cosper of the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, 339th District Court, and Kim Ogg of the Ogg Law Firm.

“When we first approached the judges and the Harris County Community Supervision and Corrections Department, they were eager to find an additional avenue for individuals charged in their courts to repay the community. The Clean and Green Program provides an additional opportunity to allow these individuals to again become contributing members of society,” said Ogg. “It also provides taxpayers with a practical and cost-effective way of cleaning up Houston’s waterways.”
