EXTRACT: In 2006, Shell suspended chip-and-pin payments at 600 petrol stations after £1 million vanished from accounts of customers whose card details are thought to have been copied.

A gang that used advanced technology to steal the credit card details of commuters buying tickets at railway station machines has been stopped.

The Romanian gang used a miniature camera and a magnetic strip reader to record pin numbers and card details, which were destined to be used to create fake cards.

The fraud may have netted hundreds of thousands of pounds. Jailing Ion Tanese, 28, and Ioan Filip, 36, at Southwark Crown Court in London, Judge Andrew Goymer said the operation represented “huge potential for loss” to unsuspecting travellers. read more

Financial Times: Oman LNG pact sets the tone for future deals

By Raphael Minder in Bangkok
Published: March 16 2008 17:46 | Last updated: March 16 2008 17:46

Last year Oman was due to sell the bulk of its liquefied natural gas production to Spain. In view of surging demand in Asia, however, it decided to ask its Spanish customers to forfeit the order and divert the shipment instead to higher-paying Asian bidders.

The Spanish companies – Union Fenosa and Gas Natural – agreed, and Oman then equally split the profit on the Asian sale with them.

“This really was a win-win situation,” says Adnan Rajab, vice-president at Oman LNG. “We are one of the pioneers of such diversions and we certainly want to have such flexibility in our contracts.” read more

Financial Times: Shell hopes for Nigeria boost

By Matthew Green in Abuja
Monday 17 March 2008

Royal Dutch Shell hopes to boost oil output in Nigeria after agreeing a new plan to tackle chronic funding shortfalls hitting production at its joint venture with the government.

The Anglo-Dutch oil major has accepted the outlines of a presidential proposal under which the joint venture would raise its own financing rather than rely on cash from the government, say people familiar with the talks.

As an interim measure, Shell has offered to lend the government the money to back its share of the financing costs until the scheme is finalised. Terms have yet to be agreed, partly because Nigeria is reluctant to take on debt owed to Western majors. read more

Financial Times: Political victory of sorts for Imperial

Published: March 16 2008 18:20 | Last updated: March 16 2008 18:20

Imperial Energy, the FTSE 250 oil explorer, is set to announce a boost to its Russian reserves in a sign of easing political relations, writes Stanley Pignal.

The Russian ministry of natural resources has approved an extra 55m barrels of registered oil and gas reserves from the company’s South Maiskoye field in Siberia. The additional booked oil represents 16 per cent of Imperial’s 432m barrels reserves.

The move marks a political victory of sorts for Imperial after a period of strained relations with Russian authorities. Last April, Oleg Mitvol, the powerful head of Russia’s environmental watchdog, attacked the company for not meeting exploration obligations. read more

Anglo-Dutch oil giant Shell is to cut its reserve figures for 2007

LONDON (AFP) — Anglo-Dutch oil giant Shell is to cut its reserve figures for 2007, taking about 1.3 billion barrels off its books or the equivalent of nearly one year’s production, The Observer said Sunday.

The weekly newspaper said the company would announce the writedown of at least 200 million barrels off the estimates for its operations in Nigeria while another 1.1 billion barrels would be lost from Russia.

The revision of its booked proven reserves will be outlined when Shell chief executive Jeroen van der Veer sets out the company’s annual strategy presentation on Monday, it added, without citing sources. read more

The Observer: Shell to write off half of last year’s reserves (*The bad news we predicted was in the pipeline)

Tim Webb
Sunday March 16 2008

Shell is to slash reserve figures from last year by more than half, taking about 1.3 billion barrels of oil off its books, equivalent to about a year’s production.

Chief executive Jeroen van der Veer is also expected to say that production growth will be zero or near zero until 2010 when he gives the oil giant’s annual strategy presentation tomorrow.

The City has been particularly sensitive about this issue ever since Shell mis-stated its reserve figures in 2004. The company was forced to pay out more than £200m in fines and compensation to settle the scandal. read more

WHITE PLAINS

WITH a history of using alternative-fuel vehicles long before it became chic, White Plains now is the Northeast hub — and one of three cities nationwide — for a model program designed to put hydrogen-powered cars in consumers’ hands.

In partnership with General Motors and a division of Shell Oil, the city has opened on its property the only hydrogen refueling station in the metropolitan area equipped for public use, G.M. and city officials said. read more
