LONDON -(Dow Jones)- State-owned Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, or NNPC, is “very close” to striking a deal with oil majors on a $8 billion in funding gap, a senior NNPC manager said Monday.

A deal could help the resumption of critical oil investments in Nigeria after NNPC delayed payments of its share of funding in joint-ventures with foreign majors and hindered new developments as a result.

Speaking to Dow Jones Newswires, Levi Ajuonuma, NNPC’s group manager for public affairs, said Nigerian officials were currently holding meetings in London with Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDSB.LN) on the matter. read more

Times of Malta: European firm thrives in Iran despite sanctions

Monday, 3rd March 2008
Reuters

Robert Mills, country manager of German-owned delivery and logistics group DHL Express, says his firm is enjoying explosive growth in Iran, despite tightening international sanctions on the Islamic Republic over its disputed nuclear plans.

With a longstanding US embargo barring two key rivals from entering the world’s fourth-largest crude producer, DHL Express claims a share of at least 60 per cent of what Mills called one of the region’s fastest-growing markets for the sector. read more

UpstreamOnline: One hurt in Bonny Island attack

By Upstream staff

Attackers armed with automatic rifles and dynamite blew up a police houseboat on the Bonny Island oil and gas export hub in Nigeria’s southern Niger Delta, seriously injuring one person, a police spokeswoman said.

No oil and gas facilities were damaged. Anglo-Dutch supermajor Shell has an oil export terminal at Bonny and the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas company has its main facilities there.

Ireju Barasua, a police spokeswoman in the Rivers state capital Port Harcourt, told Reuters the attackers blew up a marine police houseboat, torched some cars and also aimed explosives at the compound of the traditional ruler of Bonny. One man was seriously hurt in the attack. read more

oilandgasnewsonline.com: Cheap renewable energy still far off says Veer

Volume: 25, No. 9: March 3 – 9, 2008

BRUSSELS:

The world faces a doubling of energy demand by 2050 but renewable sources are still too expensive and will take decades to make a big impact, Royal Dutch Shell CEO Jeroen van der Veer said.

In a speech on “Shell scenarios for the 21st century”, van der Veer said one of the three hard truths facing the world was a big rise in demand as the global population rose from around six billion to nine billion by mid-century.

He told the EastWest Institute think-tank in Brussels that Shell saw “about 50 per cent more demand for energy in the world in the coming 25 years, and a doubling of energy (demand) by 2050”. read more

oilandgasnewsonline.com: Shell sees big oil, gas potential in US Arctic

Volume: 25, No. 9 March 3 – 9, 2008

ANCHORAGE:

Royal Dutch Shell is looking for oil and gas in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas off the coast of Alaska, but the finds will have to be significant to justify the huge cost of development, a senior Shell executive said.

Shell surprised many in the oil industry when it bid $2.1 billion for acreage in this month’s controversial auction of drilling rights in the Chukchi Sea, a large polar bear habitat, and one of the least explored areas in US federal waters. read more

Financial Times: Activists target oil

Published: March 3 2008 02:00 | Last updated: March 3 2008 02:00

The archetypal oilman is the “wildcatter”, smelling out opportunities below the surface. Activist fund managers, who also like to think of themselves as mavericks, see a chance to strike it big in the US energy sector. Both Icahn Partners and Jana Partners have raised their stakes in the likes of Anadarko Petroleum and Hess Corp; mid-sized oil and gas companies with a market capitalisation each of about $30bn.

Commodity prices are one attraction. Oil bobs around $100 a barrel and natural gas costs $9 per thousand cubic feet, but exploration and production stocks imply long-term prices closer to $70 and $6 respectively. read more

Financial Times: Stagflation fears as commodities post strongest gains since 1970s

By Javier Blas in Vienna
Published: March 3 2008 02:00 | Last updated: March 3 2008 02:00

Commodities prices posted their biggest monthly gains in February since the oil crisis of the 1970s and have enjoyed their strongest start to any year for half a century.

The gains have been fuelled by an explosion in popularity among investors seeking refuge from turmoil affecting equity and credit markets, and supported by strong demand from emerging markets, widespread supply disruptions and a growing interest in commodities as a hedge against rising inflation and the weakness of the US dollar. read more

Financial Times: Gas is key to future growth of oil groups

By Sheila McNulty in Houston
Published: March 2 2008 18:42 | Last updated: March 2 2008 18:42

The world’s international oil groups are turning to gas for future growth after increasingly being blocked by national companies from pursuing oil opportunities.

Gas-centred deals such as Chevron’s 2005 acquisition of Unocal, ConocoPhillips’ 2006 purchase of Burlington Resources and Eni’s buy-out of Dominion’s assets in the Gulf of Mexico last year underline the change in strategy.

Demand fuels oil industry confidence – Feb-20The shift is forcing large oil companies to adapt their approach to the business that has generated the bulk of their profits for more than a century. read more

Daily Telegraph: Shell likely to miss Canada tar sands

By Russell Hotten
Last Updated: 1:48am GMT 03/03/2008

Hopes that Royal Dutch Shell would be allowed to include oil reserves from a huge project in Canada in time for a major strategy announcement later this month have been dashed.

This will disappoint the City and raise concern about the Anglo-Dutch giant’s ability to grow profits from its multibillion-pound expansion into unconventional sources of oil such as Canada’s tar sands fields.

Shell’s oil and gas reserves have been a sensitive issue since the 2004 scandal when Shell booked more assets than it actually had. read more
