LAGOS (Reuters) – The corporate behaviour of Royal Dutch/Shell in Nigeria feeds a vicious cycle of violence and corruption, contributing to the theft of its crude oil, according to a leaked report funded by the oil giant.

And increasing criminalisation of the poverty-stricken Niger Delta could force Shell out of onshore production in Africa’s largest oil producer by 2008, the report by consultants WAC Global Services said.

Shell executives acknowledged the company had inadvertently fed the violence, saying it was difficult to operate ethically in the Niger Delta and that its attempts at community development “had been less than perfect”. read more

New Orleans area drivers aren’t the only ones dealing with faulty fuel gauges caused by sulfur in gasoline. Similarly tainted fuel has been reported in at least four other states and in Canada.

Joyce Williams was driving home from work late on the afternoon of May 25 when her Chevrolet pickup truck stalled near the peak of the High Rise bridge over the Industrial Canal in New Orleans.

Williams coasted down the bridge and took the first exit off the highway. Even though Williams’ gas gauge indicated she had more than a quarter of a tank left, she was out of gas. read more

Shell faces rough ride from investors

The Sunday Telegraph: Shell faces rough ride from investors

By Sylvia Pfeifer and Robert Watts (Filed: 13/06/2004)

Royal Dutch/Shell is heading for a showdown with leading investors at its annual meeting this month unless the oil giant provides greater detail of its promised strategy to overhaul its complex corporate structure.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) is threatening to reject Shell’s remuneration report ahead of the annual meeting on June 28 if planned discussions with the company’s executives over the coming days do not go well. This would lead to the ABI issuing a “red top” warning, which indicates serious corporate governance breaches. read more

The Observer: Can they be sure of Shell?

The Observer: Can they be sure of Shell?

Sunday June 13, 2004

It was hard not to raise eyebrows when the Shell Foundation invited me to check its projects in Uganda. Was this trip a blatant attempt to redress the PR balance after the media mauling the Anglo-Dutch combine has endured, particularly in recent months? Or was something more fundamental going on? Perhaps a quantum shift in the way business deals with society?

Launched in 2000, with £250 million, the sheer size of Shell’s foundation makes it at a stroke one of the most powerful charities in the world. It works by partnering local banks in developing countries. The banks identify small businesses desperate for investment to buy equipment, particularly businesses that are energy-related. read more

Revealed: How Shell’s desperate thirst for oil is devastating Nigeria

The Observer: Revealed: How Shell’s desperate thirst for oil is devastating Nigeria

The full extent of environmental devastation to areas around Shell’s Nigerian oil interests is revealed in a new series of pictures showing contaminated land, forests, lakes and communities in the immediate vicinity of Shell refineries and pipelines.

Evidence amassed by a team from Friends of the Earth (FoE) and passed to The Observer will place further pressure on the beleaguered oil giant. According to eye witnesses, significant oil spillages close to communities have not been cleaned up by Shell or the Nigerian authorities, despite promises of action. read more
