A federal appeals court reverses the dismissal of a lawsuit brought by L.A.-area gas station owners over the firms’ joint ventures.

A federal appellate court, pointing to a pact between Shell Oil Co. and Texaco Inc. to sell gasoline at the same price, ruled Tuesday that the companies must face trial for alleged antitrust violations.

The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, sitting in Pasadena, reversed an earlier decision by U.S. District Judge George H. King dismissing a lawsuit brought by the operators of 39 Los Angeles-area gas stations. read more

Foreign companies in Saudi Arabia are offering to repatriate the families of their staff in the wake of the bloody weekend rampage by militants that left 22 dead, most of them foreigners.

As new clashes between suspected militants and security forces were reported in the west of the country, several Japanese companies joined Shell, the Anglo-Dutch oil giant, in offering to pull relatives out of the kingdom.

One Japanese firm said it may also evacuate its workers, though it was too early to tell whether there would be an exodus. Saudi Arabia relies on 6 million expatriates to operate its oil and other industries. The vast majority are Asian, with British and American workers numbering around 25,000. read more

MELBOURNE — Royal Dutch/Shell (RD) has committed to operating both of its Australian oil refineries beyond 2006, putting to rest speculation it could shut at least one facility in the lead-up to the introduction of tough new fuel standards.

Shell Australia Chairman Tim Warren issued the commitment to both Australian refineries, but said the company has no intention of boosting its combined capacity of 205,000 barrels a day.

His comments came as Shell Australia reported a 5.9% fall in 2003 earnings before interest and tax of A$815 million. This compares to a profit of A$866 million for the year ended December 2002. read more

WARRI, Nigeria (AP)–Rival ethnic militants in Nigeria’s troubled oil delta clasped hands and pledged peace Tuesday after the killings of two U.S. oil workers prompted a government crackdown on a yearlong spree of bloodletting that killed hundreds and razed villages.

“The only solution to our problems is at a round table,” said Dan Reyenieju, leader of an ethnic Itsekiri delegation. He was flanked by archrival Ijaws in a dingy social club in the Niger Delta oil city of Warri. read more
