Soaring world oil prices have not only cost motorists at the petrol pump – Australia’s largest supermarket chain, Woolworths, has conceded its sales have been hit.

Asked if the rise in petrol prices in recent weeks had magnified the sales growth difference between the rival retailers, Woolworths chief executive Roger Corbett said: “Yes, for a period of time, a very limited period of time, there is an impact.”

He pointed to the bigger Coles-Shell network of petrol outlets (590 compared with 460 in Woolworths-Caltex) and the lack of branding on Woolworths-Caltex sites. read more

CANBERRA — Outlining a clear break with Australia’s conservative government, the center-left Labor Party plans a much more conciliatory approach to a protracted border dispute with East Timor.

If Labor wins office at an election later this year, it wants to settle a permanent sea boundary in three to five years and increase the intensity of negotiations as Dili seeks a massive redistribution of royalties from the Timor Sea oil and gas fields. read more

Attorneys sought a court order Thursday asking a federal judge to stop Shell Oil Co. from requiring consumers to sign away their rights when filing claims to fix fuel gauges damaged by tainted gasoline.

Fort Lauderdale lawyer David Scott said Shell imposed “burdensome restrictions” on consumers by requiring them to sign releases and have their vehicles “undergo limited automotive inspections” in order to be reimbursed. read more

Sulphur harms gas gauges in Florida

Oil giant Shell is reimbursing motorists in Florida for fuel gauge repairs made necessary by contaminated gasoline, something its Canadian subsidiary wouldn’t do here last year.

An official for Shell Oil’s refiner in the United States has confirmed it will start sending cheques today to customers who complained about faulty gauges after buying gas containing corrosive elemental sulphur from the company and Texaco. read more

SHELL’S refining operations have posted a profit of $183 million for the 2003 year, pushing the oil company’s total profits for the year to $815 million.

The figure, a drop of $20 million on Shell’s oil products $203 million profit in 2002, came as the company poured $178 million into capital works at its Geelong and Clyde refineries.

Shell’s upstream operations – its exploration, production and natural gas business – returned a profit of $632 million, down $31 million on the previous year’s $663 million. read more

Lawsuit Claims High-Sulfur Gas Ruined Gas Gauges

MIRAMAR, Fla. — Two drivers are suing Shell Oil, Texaco and a refinery, claiming the gas gauges on their cars were damaged by high-sulfur gas.

The class-action lawsuit filed Wednesday could come to represent thousands of motorists in south Florida who are furious over the prospect of facing high repair bills. Named in the lawsuit are Shell, its subsidiary, Texaco, and Motiva Enterprises, a Louisiana-based refinery. Observers say the legal action could soon come to represent thousands of motorists. read more
