EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (CN) – A federal judge certified a class action accusing Shell Oil Co. of contaminating private property near its refinery in Roxana, Ill.

Lead plaintiff Jeana Parko sued Shell Oil Company, Equilon Enterprises dba Shell Oil Products US, ConocoPhillips Company, WRB Refining LP, ConocoPhillips WRB Partner and Cenovus GPCO in Madison County Court in April 2012. The lawsuit was later removed to federal court.

Parko claims she and her neighbors suffered lower property values due to benzene and other carcinogenic chemical releases that have contaminated the groundwater, land and air of Roxana. The emissions are allegedly caused by broken pipelines and the refinery itself. More than 200,000 pounds of pure benzene were released from a pipeline directly into the ground during the time Shell owned the refinery, according to a release from Simmons Browder Gianaris Angelides & Barnerd, the firm representing the class. read more

Motiva’s Port Arthur refinery expansion woes have people wondering how it could all go so wrong for a group of companies with so much expertise.

The refinery, which was expanded from 325,000 b/d to 600,000 b/d, is owned by Shell and Saudi Aramco. read more

Bad Omen for the Future of Mega-Oil Projects

Seven years and $24 billion. No, that isn’t the price tag for a major project coming online. That’s how late and how much over budget the giant Kashagan oil project in the Caspian Sea ended up being before it started flowing this week.

Seven years and $24 billion.

No, that isn’t the price tag for a major project coming online. That’s how late and how much over budget the giant Kashagan oil project in the Caspian Sea ended up being before it started flowing this week. Bringing in multiple stakeholders on these complex, challenging megaprojects in the energy industry has become a pretty nasty cocktail for those involved. Are the blunders with Kashagan an exception or the rule when it comes to these major projects? Let’s look at some other major projects going on right now to see what Big Oil has in store for its next big move. read more
