AMSTERDAM, Oct. 5 — Greenpeace International issued the following news release:

Royal Dutch Shell has failed in its bid to win a sweeping injunction against two offices of Greenpeace, a setback to the company’s attempt to end protests by the environmental group over Arctic oil drilling.

In a ruling issued today, Shell’s proposed injunction was rebuffed by the President of the Amsterdam court, Han Jongeneel, who said the protests Greenpeace Netherlands has already taken in the Netherlands at Shell’s headquarters and petrol stations were both proportionate and appropriate in light of Greenpeace’s earlier efforts to end Shell’s Arctic oil drilling through other means. read more

Dutch court rejects Shell protest ban

A Dutch court has rejected a case brought by Royal Dutch Shell against Greenpeace International to prevent protesters holding demonstrations on or near Shell property.

The Amsterdam District Court said the company should expect public protest about controversial business practices.

But it also gave Greenpeace a list of guidelines to ensure protests were “proportionate”.

Shell had sought a fine of 1.1m euros ($1.2m) for a breach of the ban.

But the Amsterdam court ruling said: “The judge took as a starting point that organisations such as Greenpeace are, in principle, free to carry out actions to let the public know about their point of view.” read more

Motiva may restart Port Arthur unit in December

Motiva Enterprises plans to restart a damaged 325,000-barrel-a-day crude unit at its Port Arthur refinery as early as the first week in December, according to people familiar with refinery operations.

Motiva expects to complete repairs on the unit this month and conduct test runs and pressure checks in November, said the people, who declined to be identified because they are not authorized to speak for the refinery.

Motiva said on July 19 that it expected to restart the crude unit early in 2013. The restart has been accelerated because of steady progress in the repairs, the people said. read more
