Nigeria Has Scope for $400 Billion Energy Spending, Shell Says

By Dulue Mbachu – Oct 4, 2012 4:43 PM GMT+0100

Nigeria has the scope for at least $400 billion of spending in the oil, gas and power industries provided the environment for investment improves, said Bernard Bos, Royal Dutch Shell Plc’s (RDSA) vice president for finance and strategy in sub-Saharan Africa.

The lack of attractive terms for investment means money that should have come to Nigeria is going to other African countries and Australia, Bos said at an investment conference today in Lagos, the commercial capital. read more

Shell begins drilling well at Beaufort Sea prospect

Thu Oct 4, 2012 4:04pm GMT

ANCHORAGE, Alaska Oct 4 (Reuters) – Royal Dutch Shell Plc has started drilling a well in the Beaufort Sea off northern Alaska, making good on exploration plans that had been stalled by floating ice, technical delays and problems with meeting oil spill-preparation requirements.

Shell said it started drilling late on Wednesday at its Sivulliq prospect after getting clearance from Inupiat Eskimo whalers, who had just completed their autumn bowhead whale hunt. Under the plans, operations must cease by the end of October. read more

Shell Optimax: The wonder fuels that don’t deliver

FROM OUR SHELL NEWS ARCHIVE OCTOBER 2004

The Sunday Times: The wonder fuels that don’t deliver

“In February this year the Advertising Standards Authority upheld complaints against the claims Shell was making in its adverts, including that Optimax gives “an extra burst of power just when you need it”.

The ads claim they are wonder fuels but our test was less than impressive

It is, according to Shell, petrol “with a dash of Ferrari”. Or as BP prefers to put it, fuel with “extra oomph”. Both oil giants are piling massive marketing budgets into their premium fuels — Shell’s Optimax and BP’s Ultimate. The fuels are on sale at the same pumps as ordinary unleaded, but cost about 20p per gallon more. The companies are keen to convince you to pay. read more

Shell starts exploratory drilling in Beaufort Sea

 October 03, 2012

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Shell Oil says it has begun exploratory drilling in the Beaufort Sea off Alaska’s north coast as it continues to drill in the neighboring Chukchi Sea.

Shell Alaska spokesman Curtis Smith says Beaufort drilling started Wednesday after the end of an Alaska Native whale hunt.

Smith says the company hopes to drill until the seasonal Oct. 31 deadline.

Shell announced last month it would limit drilling this year to non-petroleum zones.

The company can’t drill into those zones until its spill response barge is in place, and Smith says that won’t happen this year. read more

For poor Alaskan village, oil could change everything

October 4, 2012 06:22

WAINWRIGHT, Alaska – This small village is about to be taken over by big oil.

There are about 550 people who live here, most of them Inupiaq Eskimos. The remote village on Chukchi Sea has lived a traditional way of life as subsistence hunters for thousands of years.

In more recent decades, they have struggled with poverty and drug abuse. The geographical fate that makes them the closest spit of land to Royal Dutch Shell’s lease holds on vast offshore oil fields will likely change their lives in many ways. read more
