Energy in 2050 — Shell’s Peter Voser

This year will likely be the first time in history that a company tops $500 billion in sales. Two oil companies are good bets to pass the mark: the U.S.’ ExxonMobil and the U.K.-registered, Netherlands-headquartered Royal Dutch Shell. In late March I talked with Shell’s CEO, Peter Voser, onstage at a Silicon Valley Churchill Club event.

Shell Oil targets hybrid cloud as fix for energy-saving, agile IT

Computerworld – DALLAS — Two years ago, Shell Oil’s IT subsidiary found itself in a somewhat ironic situation. It was facing staggering energy costs.

Among its three main worldwide data centers and 400 regional data centers, the company saw its energy use grow by 3.6 megawatts over a nine-month period.

With local, state and international regulations, power and data center capacity aren’t easy to come by, said Kayoor Gajarawala, general manager of hosting, storage and enterprise service delivery for Shell Information Technology. read more

Shell Considers Building Gas-to-Diesel Plant in Louisiana

Royal Dutch Shell RDSA -1.36% PLC is considering building a giant plant in Louisiana that would convert natural gas into diesel fuel, several people familiar with the company’s plans said.

The plant, which could cost more than $10 billion, would be similar in size to Shell’s Pearl gas-to-liquids facility in the Mideast nation of Qatar, the people said. Pearl, which went into operation last June, turns natural gas into enough diesel to fill more than 160,000 cars a day. read more

Corruption and Leadership: An Endless Cycle?

Corruption is a growing issue in a world that is nearing complete transparency – these problems are not out in the open. Many schools, from top undergraduate business programs to top masters degree programs, are taking them on with increased education, but what about the professional world which already exists?

In 2008, Pricewaterhouse Coopers commissioned a study on corporate corruption entitled Confronting Corruption. In the study, some astounding levels of corruption were revealed. Of the 390 senior executives interviewed for the study, sixty-three percent stated that they had experienced some form of corruption, while forty-five percent stated that their company had forgone business opportunities in a particular market, environment or sector because that area was feared to be corrupted. read more
