HOUSTON, April 12 (Reuters) – Motiva Enterprises LLC’s Port Arthur refinery is on track to become the largest in the United States by September when its capacity reaches planned rates of 600,000 barrel per day (bpd) with the addition of a 325,000 bpd crude distillation unit, expected to begin start-up by late April.

The start-up is not expected to bring a surge in production along the Gulf Coast as Motiva plans to carry out repairs on other production units as well as take its time starting the new unit to iron out any kinks. read more

Shell’s Nigerian oil spills soar

Shell is facing the prospect of an embarrassing litigation in London, from Nigerian villagers affected by oil spills in 2008, after talks on a settlement broke down last month…

By Tom Bergin: LONDON, April 12 | Thu Apr 12, 2012 2:07pm EDT

(Reuters) – Royal Dutch Shell Plc said on Thursday that oil spills at its facilities in Nigeria soared last year, as it faces lawsuits in the UK regarding earlier spills.

Shell said in its annual Sustainability Report that the number of operational spills onshore increased to 63 in 2011, from 32 in 2010.

The volume of operational spills jumped to 5,300 tonnes from 700 tonnes in 2010, largely due to a leak at its offshore Bonga facility. read more

Royal Dutch Shell PLC says its operational oil spills nearly doubled last year in Nigeria

By Associated Press, Updated: Thursday, April 12, 8:13 PM

LAGOS, Nigeria — Royal Dutch Shell PLC says the number of its operational oil spills nearly doubled last year.

Shell made the statement Thursday in its annual sustainability report, saying it had 63 operational spills in 2011. That’s compared to 32 spills in 2010.

Shell blamed them on restarting pipelines it hadn’t run in some time in Nigeria’s oil-rich Niger Delta over fears of militancy. Shell also said spills came from increasing thefts along its pipelines in the region.

Shell said it spilled 5,300 tons of oil in 2011. The company blamed the majority of that on a spill at its Bonga offshore oil facility in December. By comparison, the company said it spilled nearly 14,000 tons in 2009. read more
