Feds say timely answer ahead on Alaska drilling

A top federal official said today the Interior Department is committed to giving Shell Oil Co. a firm, timely answer on its applications to drill off the Alaska coast starting next summer.

Deputy Interior Secretary David Hayes said his department is well along in its consideration of several components of Shell’s applications for drilling exploratory wells in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas starting next summer.

“We are committed to giving them a timely up or down,” Hayes told reporters at an event hosted by Platts Energy Podium. Although he didn’t specify an exact date to expect a final decision, he said the department has a general sense that Shell needs input early this year. read more

Our farms destroyed by Shell oil spill, communities allege

Some communities in Delta, Bayelsa and Akwa Ibom states have alleged the destruction of their farms and land in the oil spill at Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCO). Over 4,000 barrels of oil were spilled from Shell’s Bonga facility.

Describing the spill as the worst in the country since 1998, the communities, in a letter, called on Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and the Federal Government to assist their people, whose waters, have been polluted. read more

Royal Dutch Shell supports relief efforts for typhoon Sendong victims

Royal Dutch Shell plc said today that it is donating US$1 million, in response to the catastrophic typhoon Sendong (international name typhoon Washi). The deadliest cyclone to hit the Philippines in the last 12 years, typhoon Sendong left over a thousand people dead in the provinces of northern Mindanao and billions worth of infrastructure and agriculture in ravages.

The donation from Royal Dutch Shell will be used for rehabilitation efforts in the areas badly hit by typhoon Sendong, as a way of providing long-term assistance for the affected communities. read more

Shell-Exxon venture reports natural gas discovery

AMSTERDAM

A joint venture between Shell and Exxon says it has successfully drilled a significant new onshore natural gas field in the Netherlands.

Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij BV says in a statement the field contains 4 billion cubic meters of gas, about enough to supply 2.5 million households for a year. Production is due to begin this summer, the company says.

The Metslawier-zuid well, 3,900 meters (12,800 feet) deep, is located near the city of Dokkum, 130 kilometers (80 miles) northeast of Amsterdam. read more
