Shell shuts GOM oil pipeline near Transocean fire

REUTERS

NEW YORK, April 22 (Reuters) – Shell Oil Co (RDSa.L) said Thursday it temporarily shut down a 75,000 barrel-per-day crude oil pipeline in the Gulf of Mexico as a precautionary measure due to its proximity to the Transocean rig fire.

The pipeline known as Nakika supplies the larger Delta pipeline system and Motiva’s Norco, Louisiana, refinery.

A company spokeswoman said Shell does not expect the pipeline to be shut for long and said the outage would have no material impact on the Norco refinery’s operations. read more

More sleaze and corruption involving Shell

The sources said when these two letters arrived at the ministry, the evaluation team was asked to “accommodate” Shell at all costs. The sources said after some typical bureaucratic resistance, the official summary to be sent to the ECC contained the name of Shell, which was the highest bidder. The name of FF/Vitol was replaced with Shell. The report of the consultant opposing the award of contract to Shell was thrown in the dustbin.

Now, a multi-billion dollar LNG contract scam in Pak surfaces

Malaysia Sun

In yet another massive scam that could run into billion of dollars, the Pakistan Supreme Court has been told that a French company was awarded two contracts for the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) without even participating in the bidding procedure.

During a hearing, Petroleum Ministry’s special secretary G A Sabari told the apex court that the French company, GDF Suez, had neither applied for the short term (five years) 3.5 million tons gas supply nor for the long term (20 years), as required under the bidding laws. read more

Shell sounds alarm over energy growth

CAIRO, April 22 (UPI) — The Middle East will struggle to keep up with rising demand even with “heavy investments” in conventional and alternative energy, Shell officials said in Cairo.

Malcolm Brinded, executive director for upstream business at Royal Dutch Shell, told an audience at the American University in Cairo that rising energy demand and increasing population levels are putting global energy supplies under pressure.

He pointed to estimates from the International Energy Agency that suggest global energy demand will double by 2050 in part because of economic growth in developing economies. read more

Shell Conchas Project Is ‘Above Expectations,’ Odum Tells Valor

Royal Dutch Shell at the crossroads

“No attempts are currently being made to rectify under-performance in either the refining or the marketing sectors. Refiners, like Stanlow, will be disposed of to others who, if they keep them operating, will have the energy and the skill to make them profitable. Shell doesn’t want to do this.”

Posting on Shell Blog by Wilt Staph on Apr 20th, 2010 at 10:06 am

There is a palpable sense that Shell is at the crossroads in so many ways at the moment. The broad strategy, “More Upstream, Profitable Downstream” reveals more, to insiders, than the bare words may suggest. The truth is that Shell is increasingly an upstream company – for many years this business segment has been the primary focus but over the past year or so, and especially under Voser, this has accelerated. Almost any upstream is good – one is reminded of George Orwell’s Animal Farm where the rather similar mantra was “Four legs good, two legs bad!”. The upstream has four legs and the downstream only two but, reluctantly it seems, “bad” though it is, some downstream assets and businesses will be held onto so long as they are “profitable”. No such requirement seems to apply to the upstream! read more

Fitch Warns on Shell’s Credit Rating

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

APRIL 19, 2010 By JAMES HERRON

LONDON—Fitch Ratings on Monday revised its outlook for energy giant Royal Dutch Shell PLC’s credit rating to negative from stable, citing doubts that the company’s medium-term cash flow will be strong enough to maintain its current double-A-plus rating.

The decision is a blow for Shell, which is nearing the end of a major restructuring and hopes that 2010 will mark a turnaround from its weakening performance in recent years.

“Despite Shell’s forecasted production increase of approximately 600,000 barrels of oil equivalent [a day] by 2014 in a $60 per barrel price environment, the company’s operating cash flow in the medium term may be insufficient to restore its financial profile,” Fitch said in a statement. read more

EARNINGS PREVIEW: Momentum Shifts From BP To Shell In 1Q

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

19 APRIL 2010 By James Herron of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

TAKING THE PULSE: After many quarters of lagging its rival BP PLC (BP), Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDSB.LN) is expected to regain some momentum in this year’s first quarter.

Improvements in many of Shell’s key markets and a long-awaited return to oil and gas output growth should paint a more positive picture for Shell after a bad set of fourth-quarter results, analysts say.

“[This] could be a more important quarter for Shell. Its above-average exposure to European gas seasonality given the cold weather, to crude-linked gas prices and refining should help start to restore the market’s confidence in its earnings power,” said Collins Stewart in a research note. read more

Shell employees: American vs European pay

Shell should learn from the Asian and put them in key positions but instead they are sending more Americans and European to Asia.

Posting on Shell Blog by AsiaDragon on Apr 18th, 2010 at 3:27 am

So much about American vs European pay, how about their capability and competency in this challenging World. It is outdated model. It is also a case of a Pot calling a Kettle black. The Asian’s pay are 30-50% lower or even more but working twice as hard. Look at both the Top and Middle level management in the last 1 year, who has delivered more businesses. Shell should learn from the Asian and put them in key positions but instead they are sending more Americans and European to Asia. It only increases the cost and reduces productivity. So much about diversity, why not include an Asian in the EC to start with. Time to wake up. Vision 2010. read more

Graphic From Daily Mail Article: Shell braced for yet another revolt over directors’ pay

Wilt Staph Posting on Apr 15th, 2010 at 10:16 am

Shell insiders will be shocked but not surprised by the revelations about Linda cook’s departure. There are two main factors at play in this sorry saga – Americanisation and diversity. Senior American executives in Shell have historically had bonus and pay structures which far exceed those of their mainly European colleagues. The uneasy relationship between Shell’s US subsidiary, Shell Oil, and the rest of RDS over the years led to a number of high-flying Americans moving into the Shell international arena to try and address this problem. In virtually every instance these moves have been unmitigated disasters. read more

The exit of Shell from downstream activities “represents all integrated oil super majors across the world retreating from the forecourt”

Stuff.co.nz By PETER KERR – BusinessWire Last updated 14:11 13/04/2010

The Infratil New Zealand Super Fund joint venture that bought Royal Dutch Shell’s local downstream assets gained an “extremely cheap” entry into the industry, according to brokerage McDouall Stuart.

The purchase at just under $700 million has been made at the bottom of the economic cycle, and both Infratil and the Super Fund are longer term participants willing to see through that cycle, said John Kidd, head of research at McDouall Stuart.

Shares of Infratil slipped 1.1 percent to $1.76, having reached an eight-month high on Monday. read more

Shell’s Iraq Gas Project Running Into Difficulty – Official

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

April 12, 2010 By Hassan Hafidh Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

A multibillion-dollar deal between Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDSB) and the Iraqi government to jointly develop domestic gas infrastructure in Iraq’s south has run into difficulty, an Iraqi official familiar with the talks said Monday.

The two sides failed to finalize the deal last month, after negotiations lasting more than a year, and have agreed to extend the talks for another six months ending Sept. 21, the official told Dow Jones Newswires.

The proposed $10 billion to $20 billion joint venture between Iraq’s South Gas Company, Shell and Mitsubishi Corp. (8058.T) aims to capture huge amounts of gas that is currently being wasted. read more

Shell urges investors to reject oil sands vote

Reuters UK

Mon Apr 12, 2010 5:32pm BST

LONDON, April 12 (Reuters) – Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSa.L) told investors to reject a shareholder motion tabled for its Annual General meeting next month which would require the oil major to review its multi-billion dollar investments in Canada’s oil sands.

Religious and environmental shareholders oppose Shell’s oil sands activities because this form of oil production uses more water and emits more carbon dioxide than pumping traditional crude.

The groups say growing concerns about climate change could lead to high charges for emitting CO2 that would make oil sands projects unprofitable. read more

Royal Dutch Shell participation in price fixing cartels

“Shell’s fine was increased by 50 percent because of its involvement in previous cartels and another 50 percent for instigating and leading the cartel.”

SHELL’S CARTEL TRACK RECORD

Anyone familiar with the history of Royal Dutch-Shell knows that the success of the oil giant was founded from the outset on a platform of price fixing. Below is some of the evidence from 1977 onwards. We will later this year publish evidence of its unscrupulous activities in this regard stretching back to its foundation.

An article published by The New York Times in September 1977 reported that legal proceedings had been brought against General Atomic Company and its joints owners, the Gulf Oil corporation and Scallop Nuclear Inc., part of the Royal Dutch Shell Group. The complex case involved allegations of price fixing of uranium as part of a secret cartel. According to a related article in Time Magazine, it was “one of the largest and most complex corporate lawsuits ever filed in an American court-a $2 billion-plus action by a New Mexico uranium mining company, United Nuclear Corp., against General Atomic Co., a 50%-owned subsidiary of Gulf Oil Corp., for fraud, coercion and breaches of the nation’s antitrust laws.” A New York Times article published on 2 January 1978, said: “Gulf and a subsidiary of the Royal Dutch-Shell Group are equal partners in General Atomic” and that Gulf conceded that its subsidiary had been involved in a uranium cartel. Time magazine reported in June 1978: “Gulf is also enmeshed in a web of lawsuits growing out of allegations that it secretly participated in a worldwide cartel to manipulate supplies and raise the price of uranium. Last week the company pleaded no contest in the U.S. Government’s case growing out of the cartel arrangement…”. A New York Times article in September 1980 reported that a New Mexico state court had rendered a default judgment against General Atomic on the grounds that it had refused to supply certain information during the discovery process. In May 1981, a New York Times article reported a settlement of the “international uranium cartel” case. read more

Royal Dutch Shell false reporting, fictitious sales, fictitious trades and manipulation of natural gas prices

According to a Reuters article: “In 2004, Shell’s U.S. gas and power trading arm Coral Energy paid $30 million to settle charges it reported fake natural gas trades. Coral did not admit or deny wrongdoing.” On 30 July 2004, The New York Times published a related article under the headline: “Shell to Pay $150 Million In Settlement On Reserves”. The last paragraph turned to a different subject, stating “Separately, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission said on Thursday that Shell’s energy trading unit, Coral Energy Resources, had agreed to pay $30 million to settle accusations that it submitted false price data to publishers. The case is part of the commission’s industry-wide investigation into suspected manipulation of the energy markets.” The previous day, 29 July 2004, the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission released a press statement headlined: “CORAL ENERGY PAYS $30 MILLION TO SETTLE U.S. COMMODITY FUTURES TRADING COMMISSION CHARGES OF ATTEMPTED MANIPULATION AND FALSE REPORTING”. The opening paragraph said: “The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) announced today the issuance of an administrative order (order) initiating and simultaneously settling charges of false reporting and attempted manipulation of natural gas transactions by Coral Energy Resources, L.P. (Coral).” The findings in the order included “from at least January 2000 through September 2002, Coral reported false, misleading or knowingly inaccurate natural gas trading information, including price and volume information, to certain price reporting firms such as Inside FERC’s Gas Market Report, and Natural Gas Intelligence” and that “Coral attempted to manipulate natural gas prices by delivering trade information to the price reporting firms with the intent to affect the market price of natural gas. The order finds that Coral reported information about trades that never occurred, altered price and volume information for certain trades, and failed to report some actual trades, all with the intent to affect the market price of natural gas.” read more

Royalty Rip-Off

NEW YORK TIMES Editorial

A version of this article appeared in print on April 12, 2010, on page A24 of the New York edition.

A sloppily written law passed by Congress 15 years ago has cost the country several billion dollars in lost oil royalties in the Gulf of Mexico and threatens to cost the country billions more. Representative Edward Markey has been trying, without success, to fix the law. He argues that the profit-rich oil companies are absconding with money that rightly belongs to American taxpayers.

The Massachusetts Democrat is submitting a new bill to right this wrong. It smartly seeks to leverage President Obama’s promise to open up selected coastal waters to offshore exploration by insisting that these oil companies start paying royalties on all of their existing leases before receiving any new leases. read more

Iraq Finances Hamper Shell Gas Project

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

APRIL 12, 2010

By HASSAN HAFIDH

A six-month extension of negotiations proposed by the Iraqi government to develop domestic gas infrastructure in the country’s south may not be enough to settle a deal with Royal Dutch Shell PLC because of financial constraints and opposition from politicians, an Iraqi official familiar with the talks said Monday.

“I don’t think we would be able to sign a deal even with the new six-month extension,” the official told Dow Jones Newswires. “Our main problem is that we are unable to secure finance for the Iraqi contribution in the venture.” read more

JTF Raises Alarm over Alleged Plot to Attack Shell Facility in N’Delta

From Segun James in Yenagoa, 04.12.2010

The Joint Task Force (JTF) on the Niger Delta, Operation Restore Hope, has raised alarm on plans to attack oil facilities belonging to the Anglo-Dutch oil giant, the Shell Petroleum Development Company.

The JTF in a statement by Lt Col TO Antigha, Coordinator Joint Media Campaing Centre warned those “ behind the plot to abandon the idea immediately in their interest and that of the nation.”

The interventionist agency made it clear that the “declaration of general amnesty and other measures taken by the Federal Government to consolidate the gains of the amnesty programme have not in any way diminished the vast capacity and capability of the JTF as a military outfit.” read more

By Yereth Rosen

ANCHORAGE, Alaska, April 10 (Reuters) – Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSa.L) has been granted a long-awaited federal air-quality permit the oil company needs to conduct exploratory drilling this year in Alaska’s Beaufort Sea, government officials said late on Friday.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued the permit to Shell to cover air pollutants emitted from the drill ship and fleet of support vessels that the company plans to mobilize to drill two exploratory wells on leases 16 to 22 miles (26 to 35 km) offshore from Alaska’s northern coast. read more
