Oil giant, Royal Dutch Shell Petroleum, will go on trial in the US in February for alleged complicity in human rights abuses in the Niger Delta.
THISDAY reports that the case deals with the 1995 hangings of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other members of the Movement of the Emancipation of the Ogoni People. In addition, it deals with an attack on a woman protesting the bulldozing of her farm by Shell in preparation for a pipeline project.
According to documents made available by EarthRights International, Shell was engaged in ‘acts of oppression’ against peaceful opposition to the company’s environmental damage and human rights abuses in the Ogoni area. The plaintiff’s action was brought under the Alien Tort Claims Act and alleges violations of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organisations Act.

The spectacle (photographs below) included a funeral procession led by a horse drawn funeral hearse with senior Nazis officials and senior Royal Dutch Shell directors in attendance, Nazi salutes at the graveside, swastika banners on display and wreaths and personal tributes from Adolf Hitler and Reichsmarschall, Hermann Goring. Deterding was an honored associate and supporter of Hitler and a personal friend of Goring.
Deterding was the guest of Hitler during a four day summit meeting at Berchtesgaden. Sir Henri and Hitler both had ambitions on Russian oil fields. Only an honored personal guest would be rewarded with a private four day meeting at Hitler’s mountain top retreat.
