Shell’s hilarious attempt to beef up email security

By John Donovan

7 October 2008

Shell employees will need to be even more on their guard when communicating by email or using instant messaging systems. Shell Global Security managed by Ian Forbes McCredie OBE, a former senior officer of the British Secret Service, will now have access to an archive of all such communications.

The new security monitoring systems are thought to be an attempt to stem the flow of leaked emails to what Reuters has described as the “unofficial” Shell website, royaldutchshellplc.com read more

Shell’s input into the Sakhalin environmental audit is questioned

US-based Pacific Environment, an environmental group that focuses on the Pacific rim, says Royal Dutch Shell influenced a supposedly independent environmental audit to determine whether its controversial Sakhalin II energy project would get finance. Campaigners say dozens of emails released by the UK government under the Freedom of Information Act show Shell officials in London attempted to downplay criticisms of the environmental impact of the $22bn oil and gas project off the east coast of Russia. Shell says its input into draft reports of this kind “is routine and designed to ensure accuracy”, but did not affect the findings in this case.  AEA Technology, which conducted and then published the audit in November 2007, says that although Shell and various banks made suggestions on the draft, it was under no pressure to accept them. It maintains the audit was an accurate, balanced and independent view of the project. Campaigners such as WWF are concerned about the effect continuous drilling at Sakhalin II, which has now received finance, will have on the endangered western grey whale.

BARCELONA, Oct 7 (IPS/Terraviva) – Royal Dutch Shell, which makes more than 310 billion dollars profit a year extracting oil and gas, mainly in third world countries, says it is up to governments rather than companies like Shell to take the lead in finding solutions for a sustainable energy future.

Shell CEO Jeroen Van der Veer told IPS in an interview at the IUCN World Conservation Congress that if governments wanted to fast-track the creation of sustainable energy, they must come up with long-term global standards to attract money into research.  read more

It is not our role to replace government’s responsibility – Shell’s Country Chair

NIGERIAN TRIBUNE

Basil Omiyi, Shell’s Country ChairViolence is becoming a constant presence in the Niger Delta, with a steady wave of attacks by militants against oil installations. Shell’s Country Chair in Nigeria, Basil Omiyi, discusses the causes of the crisis and analyses the role companies like Shell can play in helping Nigeria to find a way out. He says companies like Shell can generate revenues and jobs and invest in community development, but it’s not their role to replace government.

What is the root cause of the security crisis in Nigeria’s Niger Delta region?
The root cause is poverty. The geography of the area has been an obstacle to development. The marine part of the Delta is swampy and it’s very difficult to build roads and other essential infrastructure. Despite efforts by successive Nigerian governments in the past 40 years, the Delta region has remained poorer than most of the rest of Nigeria. read more
