NATION NEWS (Barbados): Shell launching Gibbons oil leak probe

Published on: 2/1/07.

A FULL-SCALE INVESTIGATION into the 1995 oil leak by Shell is expected to start from as early as today.

The petroleum company at the centre of a dispute with Christ Church farmers over damages to land as a result of the oil leak has contracted the services of global environmental consulting company, Environmental Resources Management, to do a full investigation.

The company is expected to provide an analysis of the area along the pipeline that was formerly used to move aviation fuel from the terminal at Oistins to Grantley Adams International Airport.

The full report is expected to be ready by September.

This was all revealed during a Press conference at Hilton Barbados yesterday.

Country chairman for the East Caribbean region of Shell Trading, Andrew Hart, said: “After September 2007 we will sit with the relevant authorities in Barbados and we will determine with them what is the appropriate action based on the findings.”

When questioned about talks between Shell and the farmers, Hart said the two parties were in active discussion through their representatives, with the last meeting held only “a couple weeks ago”. (JR-B)
