Convenience Store News: Oil Cos. Realize Poor Fourth Quarter

NEW YORK — The results are in for the fourth quarter 2006, and it doesn’t look good for the majority of oil companies. Earnings decreased for many of the industry’s major players as crude oil prices dropped along with gasoline margins.

The biggest loser might be ExxonMobil, which posted a 4 percent drop in net income for the fourth quarter of 2006. The company saw 10.25 billion in net income, a $450 million drop from the 10.7 billion seen in 2005. For the full year, however, net income grew 9 percent to $39.5 billion from the $36.13 billion seen in the end of 2005. read more

UpstreamOnline: PDO oil search does triple jump

By Upstream staff

Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) said today it has hit three new oil finds that could help it ease falling output.

One discovery is at Budour Northeast in southern Oman, while the other two are extensions of the Ufuq and Dafiq fields in northern Oman, which were discovered last year, said John Malcolm, managing director of PDO.

“These new fields will contribute to the sustainability of PDO’s oil production. It is quite significant to us and gives us major hope that we can find another cluster,” Malcolm said. read more

Calgary Herald: Energy Board wants Mackenzie Valley caveats

Safety, design conditions added to hearing process The federal energy regulator has taken the rare step of issuing a set of conditions for the proposed Mackenzie Gas Project before approving it in hopes of preventing more delays in the hearing process, it said Monday. The National Energy Board issued 46 proposed safety and design conditions for building and operating the Mackenzie Valley gas pipeline and several others for developing the three Arctic gas fields that will feed it. The board directed Imperial Oil Ltd. and its partners to respond by March 30 to the conditions, which involve stipulations for design, preconstruction, construction and operations of the proposed facilities in the NorthwestTerritories. It said all the conditions will not be known until the Joint Review Panel, which is also conducting hearings into the huge project, completes its work into the proposal. Regulators are not expected to finish their work into the 1,200 kilometre pipeline project until at least spring. The line could carry up to 1.9 billion cubic feet of gas a day to southern markets from the Mackenzie Delta on the coast of the Beaufort Sea. Imperial, meanwhile, is revising upward its cost estimate due to inflation in labour and materials costs. Some analysts have said the price tag could be 30 per cent higher than the recent estimate of $7.5 billion Cdn. Examples of the NEB’s conditions include formulating and submitting reclamation plans, writing a pre-construction safety manual and filing welding procedures with the board. Imperial’s partners in the Mackenzie project are Shell Canada Ltd., ConocoPhillips, Exxon Mobil Corp. and the Aboriginal Pipeline Group.

CALGARY HERALD: Canada’s biggest oil companies pump out another record year in profits

LISA SCHMIDT

Canada’s biggest oil companies have pumped out another record year in profits, taking in a total of $12.1 billion in 2006 to put the sector into the double digits for the first time.

Driven by soaring oil prices, the combined earnings for Canada’s integrated companies — which both explore for and refine oil and gas— were 25 per cent ahead of 2005 and up nearly 70 per cent from only twoyears ago.

Husky Energy Inc., the last of the Calgary-based integrated companies to report annual earnings for 2006, on Monday said its profits rose to $2.7 billion, topping a record $2 billion in profits the previous year. read more

Itar-Tass: Gazprom affiliation to Sakhalin 2 to help meet gas contracts

06.02.2007, 21.44

MOSCOW, February 6 (Itar-Tass) — Gazprom’s affiliation to the Sakhalin 2 project will help the fulfillment of long-term gas delivery contracts, Industry and Energy Minister Viktor Khristenko said on Tuesday.

Everything will be done to fully meet the gas contractual commitments for the next 30 years, he said.

The construction of a liquidified natural gas plant in Sakhalin is behind schedule, the minister said. The plant may become the world largest producer of liquidified natural gas. “Only liquidified natural gas is a global product,” he added. read more

Energy Tribune.com: Russia: The Energy State of the Nation

Energy Tribune: Russia: The Energy State of the Nation

By Michael J. Economides, Robert Bryce, and Pavel Romanov

As long as Russia continues to gain wealth and power from its enormous oil and gas revenues, few of its citizens dare protest President Vladimir Putin’s authoritarianism. Of course, some democratic vestiges are still preserved – elections are held, the Duma is active and lively, there are even some independent newspapers in circulation.
But all this occurs while viable political candidates opposed to Putin are being disqualified over petty formalities, and an overwhelmingly pro-Kremlin majority in the Duma is adopting laws with little or no debate. Even Kremlin officials admit that corruption has grown rampant. Meanwhile, the state-owned mass media, steered by Vladislav Surkov, Putin’s deputy chief of staff, continues to produce stories lauding life under Putin. read more

Guardian Unlimited: BP pays for safety and production woes

Fiona Walsh, business editor
Tuesday February 6, 2007

Oil giant BP today reported a fall in fourth-quarter profits, but still pushed its full-year figure up to a record $22.25bn (£11.33bn), an increase of 15% on 2005.

Hit by lower production, the group’s profits for the final three months of the year fell by 12% to $3.9bn, against $4.4bn a year ago, and almost $7bn in the third quarter.

At the same time it raised spending targets from $15.5bn to $18bn due to increased investment in improving safety at its US refineries. read more

Daily Telegraph: In the twilight of the ‘Sun King’, a new star emerges

EXTRACT: Teasing questions about a bid for Shell will be deflected. The BP hierarchy was furious at the way the Shell “secret” found its way out of the BP locker room and is uncomfortable with the perception that BP has inherited Shell’s mantle from 2005 of “beleaguered”. The Goldman team found a deal with Shell or another major appealing because of “operational synergies” but said culture clashes and “technical barriers” would make any mega-deal unlikely. read more

Barbados Advocate: Powerful ally signs on to help farmers in Shell fight

By Shawn Cumberbatch

SHELL has a bigger fight on its hands.

As the multi-national oil company reports a whopping US$25.4 billion in profits for 2006, the Southern Farmers Association, of about 30 Gibbons Boggs, Christ Church farmers, have found a major international ally in their 12-year quest for millions of dollars in compensation.

Shell Accountability Coalition (SAC), a Holland-based network of environmental, human rights and community groups, has published a new report and launched a major advertising and lobbying campaign to coincide with Shell’s February 1 announcement of a 21 per cent increase in profits. read more

Business Report (South Africa): McCarthy acquires Shell Autoserv chain

February 6, 2007
By Roy Cokayne

Pretoria – McCarthy, the vehicle retailing division of Bidvest, has acquired the Shell Autoserv chain of stand-alone service centres from Shell South Africa. The purchase price was undisclosed.

The acquisition, which is subject to competition approval, comes against the backdrop of record new vehicle sales in recent years, which has placed the servicing capacity of major motor dealerships under severe pressure.

McCarthy chief executive Brand Pretorius said yesterday that the acquisition of Shell Autoserv, which has 28 outlets nationally, would enhance the critical mass of McCarthy’s dealer footprint, especially in regard to servicing vehicles that were no longer covered by a manufacturer’s warranty. read more

The Department of Trade and Industry offered 79 traditional and 65 promote licences, where the rents are charged at 10% of normal rates, plus six frontier licences in the West of Shetland area, where some of the oil majors showed their interest. read more

AFX Asia (Focus): Australia’s Woodside denies reports that it faces revenue shortfall

Published: Feb 06, 2007

SYDNEY (XFN-ASIA) – Woodside Petroleum Ltd has said recent reports in the news media that the company faces shortfall in revenue are false.

The company, which is 34 pct owned by the Royal Dutch Shell group, said conjecture about a revenue shortfall might have been due to an internal note to staff about the general effect of projections of lower production, which had already been disclosed.

It said this note was not meant to be a financial forecast and that any changes in the amount it expects to devote to exploration and capital spending this year would be presented in its annual results, which are to be released on Feb 21. read more
