ShellNews.net: “Hans” Bouman compares Shell and Enron

We recently became aware from Shell insiders of a treasure trove of Shell internal emails from a senior Shell manager, Mr. “Hans” Bouman, which were widely circulated as collector items because of their outspoken and eloquent content, often on controversial subjects. We appealed for more and are delighted to say that they are starting to arrive. Please note that we are particularly keen to receive copies of his emails to Jeroen van der Veer – the ones which apparently found there way into the newspapers. Mr Bouman is now retired.  read more

Associated Press: Shell shuts off some Nigerian oil output

KATHERINE HOURELD

LAGOS, Nigeria – Royal Dutch Shell PLC has shut off 180,000 barrels of daily crude-oil production in Nigeria because of an unexplained pipeline leak, a company spokesman said Tuesday.

The shutdown of the pipeline in the eastern Niger Delta brings the company’s total daily production losses in Nigeria to more than 650,000 barrels a day – two-thirds of which is due to violence in the region.

It was not immediately known what caused the pipeline leak, which was first noticed Friday, a Shell spokesman said. He declined to be named because he is not authorized to speak to the media about the matter. read more

UpstreamOnline: Results flag day for BP

By Upstream staff

UK supermajor BP saw its replacement cost net profit surge by 23% in the second quarter of the year, putting it at a record $6.118 billion, as high oil prices more than made up for a drop in output.

Excluding one-off items, the result was $6.112 billion, ahead of an average forecast of $5.976 billion from a Reuters poll of 11 analysts and up from $5.81 billion in the second quarter of 2005, when the headline result was dampened by a $822 million one-off charge.

The replacement cost figure excludes changes in the value of inventories, and analysts said this figure, excluding one-offs, is the best measure of BP’s underlying performance. read more

Live Chat Comment: a Shell/Total merger?

guest_9965 :

I wonder when we are going to see the next phase of (inevitable) consolidation in the industry.

Shell has been the bridesmaid for so long it would be rather nice to see it at the altar – a Shell/Total merger would seem entirely sensible.

It would also allow a floor to ceiling re-vamp of the Shell culture, which is still too introspective and defensive. They can keep the pecten, it still means something, although retail is a tragedy in the making, just entirely re-tool the company. read more

Financial Times: Time to call it a day

EXTRACT: Lord Browne may be the outstanding oil-man of his generation, and pressure from some BP executives and shareholders to keep him is understandable. He changed their company into a worldwide major with the biggest foreign stake in Russia, and exploited low oil prices in the late 1990s to snap up much of the old Rockefeller empire,to overtake Shell and to rival ExxonMobil.

Reuters: At least 15 killed in Nigerian fighting

ABUJA, Nigeria (Reuters) — The latest violence linked to next year’s elections in Nigeria has killed at least 15 people in two southern states, local leaders and police said Monday.

Gangs sponsored by two rival politicians from the town of Bodo in oil-producing Rivers state have been attacking each other with AK-47 rifles, machetes, axes and broken bottles over the past few days, a local community leader told Reuters.

“These are factional clashes between two cult groups who have the blessing of two Bodo politicians who have ambitions for 2007,” said the leader, who did not wish to be named for fear or reprisals. In Nigeria, the word cult means gang. read more

Daily Telegraph: Database: Energy

• BG Group, the UK’s third-largest oil and gas company, said second-quarter profit fell 14pc as the company paid more taxes and didn’t repeat gains from the sale of a stake in a Kazakhstan field.

• BP and Royal Dutch Shell, Europe’s biggest oil companies, may say this week that second-quarter earnings climbed because of a surge in crude prices and a rebound in refining profits.

• EDF Energy, which supplies about a quarter of the UK’s power needs, said the company will raise natural gas and electricity household tariffs in Britain from July 31 because of higher world energy prices. read more

The Wall Street Journal: Exxon Reports Small Oil Spill At Russian Project

EXTRACT:  In May, a Russian government agency said Russian companies should gain control over both the Exxon-led project, known as Sakhalin-1, and a project called Sakhalin-2, led by Royal Dutch Shell PLC.

Exxon Mobil Corp. said it spilled a small amount of oil at a huge project on an island off the Russian coast.

Exxon, the world’s biggest publicly traded oil company by market value, said it has recovered about 30 barrels of oil from the weekend spill and expects to recover a roughly equal amount through a cleanup that is under way. That pales in comparison to the 1989 Valdez disaster in Alaska, which spilled more than 240,000 barrels of oil. But it is an unwelcome development for Exxon, which faces friction with Russia over the Sakhalin project. read more

The Wall Street Journal: Oil News Roundup: July 24, 2006 8.03pm

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL ONLINE
July 24, 2006 8:03 p.m.

Oil futures topped $75 a barrel Monday, partly on the back of a gasoline rally triggered by refinery snags. Those ranged from an outage at a ConocoPhillips refinery in Illinois to a production problem at Venezuela’s largest refinery, heightening worries about supplies during the peak-demand summer driving season. The White House’s continued opposition to an immediate cease-fire in the nearly two-week-old Israel-Hezbollah conflict added to the bullish sentiment, traders said. Here is Monday’s roundup of energy-related news: read more

Business Report (South Africa): Shell, Exxon renew hunt for crude in Asia

July 25, 2006 Edition 1

Maryelle Demongeot

Singapore – Oil majors are stepping up exploration in ageing or neglected areas of Asia, potentially helping lift output a decade after shunning the region to hunt for giant oilfields in more prospective patches.

Asia’s relative political and fiscal stability, untapped deep-water reserves and proximity to fast-growing markets has revived the appeal of wildcat drilling, seen in the appearance of majors such as Royal Dutch Shell and Exxon Mobil in places off the radar a few years ago. read more

The Scotsman: Shell displays faith in future with £25m oil and gas hub

FRANK URQUHART
Tue 25 Jul 2006

THE oil giant Shell has announced plans for a £25 million “centre of excellence” in Aberdeen, underlining its commitment to the North Sea.

A new state-of-the-art technical campus will be built to serve as a long-term base for expertise to support engineering, design and subsea developments for the global oil and gas industry.

The development should ensure a continuing key role for Aberdeen in the worldwide industry long after the last drop of offshore oil has been recovered from the North Sea. read more
