Royal Dutch Shell Plc .com: The political tide is favoring Big Oil

From CentreDaily.com

On the same day that the U.S. House voted resoundingly to lift the 25-year ban on offshore oil and gas drilling, it also rejected a measure that would have boosted the minimum average gas mileage of American cars.

That’s all you need to know about U.S. energy policy and who drives it. Consumption is king; conservation, an afterthought.

Fourteen representatives from Florida supported the pro-drilling bill, which would allow oil and natural gas rigs 50 miles from the Atlantic coast and panhandle. read more

Royal Dutch Shell Plc .com: Turnaround At Shell’s Pernis Refinery Ended – Traders

By Dow Jones Newswires

A turnaround at Royal Dutch Shell PLC’s (RDSB.LN) 420,000-barrel-a-day Pernis refinery in the Netherlands has ended, trading sources said Tuesday.

“The catalytic cracker is working…(though) they had some problems” bringing it back online, a trader said, adding maintenance work on a crude distillation unit at Europe’s largest refinery had also been completed.

A spokesman at Shell wasn’t able to provide immediate confirmation.

The cracker, which is used to produce gasoline, had been offline since April for maintenance work after utility failures at Pernis earlier this year. A re-start scheduled for early June was also put back as damage caused by the power failures turned out to be greater than expected. read more

Royal Dutch Shell Plc .com: Arctic Harshness Hinders Search for Oil

FROM THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

Region Boasts Vast Reserves,
But Conditions Could Stunt
Development for Decades
By IAN TALLEY
July 11, 2006; Page A10

OSLO — Major energy companies are making billion-dollar bets in the world’s frozen Arctic regions as they seek to tap vast deposits of oil and natural gas. But they face some of the harshest conditions on Earth, presenting formidable challenges and likely constraining development for decades.

The Arctic has almost 108 billion barrels of proven discovered oil and natural gas, or roughly 40% of Saudi Arabia’s total reserves, and the U.S. Geological Survey estimates it could hold 25% of the world’s undiscovered petroleum resources. As a result, Statoil ASA of Norway, Royal Dutch Shell PLC and other oil companies are expected to pour $3.5 billion into field-development drilling alone over the next four years. read more

ETHANOL VAPOR: Among clean-energy technologies, ethanol has been getting all of the attention lately, but it is far from a cure-all for the nation’s energy problems, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Minnesota. The study said ethanol is not as environmentally friendly as some supporters claim and would supply only 12% of U.S. motoring fuel — even if every acre of corn in the U.S. were used. The study suggested soybean-based biodiesel might be a better temporary solution, but said no agriculture-based fuel was viable in the long run. read more
