Itar-Tass: Shell to set up hi-tech systems at Russia's oil, gas fields

THE HAGUE, May 11 (Itar-Tass) – The Shell Company plans to be the first in Russia to set up high-technology systems at oil and gas fields.

Paul Ching, Vice-President of the Shell, told journalists on Thursday that by 2009 such systems would be set up at the Salym Fields in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area and, possibly, under the Sakhalin-2 project, in which the Shell is the main shareholder.

Mr. Ching said the Company plans to set up 12 such systems within the next three years. They will make it possible substantially to boost the production of hydrocarbon fuel and extract it simultaneously from several strata, not just from one, as is primarily the case now. Besides, all the processes at oil and gas fields will be remote-controlled. read more

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL: Oil-News Roundup 11 May 2006: "DEATH IN NIGERIA"

Oil-News Roundup

The WALL STREET JOURNAL ONLINEMay 11, 2006

Crude-oil futures surged to nearly $73 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange — though today's supply-problem spots included Nigeria and Texas, rather than just Iran, which has been the biggest source of market anxiety in recent weeks. Here is today's well of news about oil and fuel prices.

DEATH IN NIGERIA: Nigerian militants shot and killed an employee of Houston oil-services company Baker Hughes in the southern city of Port Harcourt. Though several Nigerian troops and civilians have died during months of militant attacks on foreign oil facilities in the Niger Delta, this was believed to be the first foreign death in the campaign. Baker Hughes didn't identify the victim, but the BBC reported that he was a U.S. national. The best-known militant group in the region, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, told the Associated Press it wasn't responsible for the killing. MEND, which has been fighting for more local involvement in Nigeria's lucrative oil industry, had earlier this week warned of more attacks on foreign oil facilities. The militant attacks have shut down about a fifth of Nigeria's total daily production, putting upward pressure on global crude prices. read more

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL: Bolivia, Brazil Tread Delicate Line In Energy Talks

Bolivia, Brazil
Tread Delicate Line
In Energy Talks

By DAVID LUHNOWMay 11, 2006; Page A10

LA PAZ, Bolivia — Bolivia and Brazil began tough negotiations yesterday on terms of Bolivia's recent decision to nationalize its oil-and-gas industry, as well as its desire to raise the price of gas it exports to its energy-hungry neighbor.

How talks play out over the next few months will shape the development of South America's energy market over the next few years.

If Bolivia's terms are too tough, foreign firms that operate here, such as Brazil's Petróleo Brasileiro SA, known as Petrobras; Spain's Repsol YPF; and France's Total SA, may stop investing in finding new gas supplies or simply walk away, leaving Bolivia to try to manage fields it hasn't run for nearly a decade. Either move would hurt the economy in South America's poorest nation, home to the region's second-biggest gas reserves after Venezuela. read more

PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria (Reuters) – An executive of U.S. oil service company Baker Hughes was shot dead in an apparently planned assassination in Nigeria's oil heartland on Wednesday, authorities said.

It was not immediately clear if the killing in the oil city of Port Harcourt was related to a five-month campaign by militants to cripple the oil industry in the world's eighth largest exporter, but a diplomat and an oil company source said they thought not. read more

Why Shell should sell off its offshore site

BELATED political leadership is turning sentiment against the Rossport Five.

But there are doubts about Shell's competence to resolve the Corrib development: Last week Shell bosses seemed to say that they would move gas processing offshore – before reneging on this soon afterwards.

The real reason is that would cost 300m and the original gas sale deal did not extract the highest price from Bord Gais. read more
