Reuters: Shell gets go-ahead for controversial Irish pipeline

Wed May 3, 2006 3:40 PM BST

By Michael Holden

DUBLIN (Reuters) – Oil giant Royal Dutch Shell <RDSa.L> secured the right to start work on a 300 million-euro (205 million-pound) gas pipeline in western Ireland on Wednesday after years of delays sparked by intense local opposition.

Shell can start work on the controversial pipeline off the County Mayo coast provided it meets strict safety conditions, the Irish government said.

Work on the pipeline, to transport gas nine kilometres (5.5 miles) inland from Shell's offshore Corrib field to a processing plant, was suspended last August to allow for an independent safety review. read more

YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, May 3 (RIA Novosti) – Russian-made equipment to tackle a potential oil spill has been delivered to the island of Sakhalin in Russia's Far East on the order of the operator for a massive energy project.

Sakhalin Energy, the operator of the Sakhalin II oil and gas project, said it had received 10 emergency complexes. A spokesman said it planned to locate two of them in the north east of the island and other eight along the oil and gas pipeline.

The representative said more than 40 pieces of various forms of equipment were designed to provide “emergency assistance in the event of any oil-product spill on land.” read more

ShellNews.net: Email to Shell International General Counsel, Richard Wiseman: Wednesday 3 MAY 2006

Dear Mr Wiseman

It was gracious of you to come out of the Shell Centre with several of your colleagues this morning to greet my leaflet distributors in such a friendly way.  I hope that you remain in the same happy mood after you read the “Open Letter” addressed to you.

Nick was pleased to see you again. As you may recall, whilst still a teenager and with no legal qualifications whatsoever, he represented Don Marketing throughout the SMART High Court trial, much to the amusement of Geoffrey Hobbs QC, the barrister representing Shell. Nick sat almost next to you for the whole three weeks of the trial but was not called on to speak one word, other than to confirm his name. He was offered no opportunity to represent DM in a proper way. The Judge ignored him.   read more

RIO DE JANEIRO, May 2 — Shell Brazil SA exercised an option to assume a 30% additional participating interest in Block BC-10 in the Campos basin off Espirito Santo, Brazil, then sold 15% of that share to ONGC Videsh Ltd. (OVL), the overseas unit of India's Oil & Natural Gas Corp.

Shell remains operator with 50% interest. Petroleo Brasileiro SA retains 35%. Brazil's National Petroleum Agency must approve the transaction. read more

LONDON (MarketWatch) — Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDSB.LN) is evaluating the effect of a decree nationalizing the Bolivian hydrocarbons industry but is still interested in opportunities in the country, a company spokesman said Tuesday.

The statement contrasts with the stance of other companies, which have said they would refrain from expanding in Bolivia after the adoption of increasingly stringent conditions to operate in the country. read more

Oil-News Roundup

The WALL STREET JOURNAL ONLINEMay 2, 2006 8:51 p.m.

Oil prices surged to nearly $75 a barrel Tuesday on the New York Mercantile Exchange, approaching their all-time nominal high set recently. Here is today's well of news about oil and fuel prices.

AUTO SALES STALL: The Big-but-Shrinking Three, General Motors, Ford and Chrysler, said their U.S. sales tumbled in April from a year ago. Continuing a recent trend, high gasoline prices hit GM and Ford especially hard, cutting into demand for the gas-slurping SUVs that have buttered the struggling auto makers' bread in recent years. Ford's F-Series pickups also likely suffered from fuel costs, Ford sales analyst George Pipas said. But the pain was not limited to SUVs: GM's car sales plunged 21%, compared with a 2% drop in light-truck sales. Oddly enough, one of the few bright spots for GM was its massive Tahoe SUV; that vehicle's sales improved, possibly because it caters to small businesses that may need a big vehicle regardless of gas prices. read more

A gas station in San Francisco had the dire news on display for all to see in late April. Little if any relief is expected through summer.

WASHINGTON, May 2 — Just last November, Senate Republican leaders extended an unusual privilege to five of the nation's top oil executives. To prevent what might seem like a “perp walk,” the officials entered a Senate hearing room outside the whirl of television and press photographers, who had been briefly shooed away from the site. read more

WASHINGTON (AP) — First Russia, then Venezuela, now Bolivia. Soaring energy prices are fueling a global wave of natural-resource nationalization that is souring the investment landscape for international oil companies and reshaping energy politics for years to come.

While it is anyone's guess as to which energy-rich developing nation will be next to assert greater state control over its oil or natural gas assets, analysts say it is only a matter of time before the actions of Russia's Vladimir Putin, Venezuela's Hugo Chavez and Bolivia's Evo Morales inspire a copycat. read more
