News.com.au (Australia): Shell faces fresh prosecution

“SHELL Australia is facing fresh prosecution over licence breaches at its Geelong refinery.”

SHELL Australia is facing fresh prosecution over licence breaches at its Geelong refinery.

Victoria’s environment protection authority has criticised the poor environmental performance of the company’s jetty operations. Shell has no documented plan to deal with a tanker hitting the refinery jetty, an accident that could release hundreds of thousands of litres of hydrocarbons into Corio Bay, an EPA Victoria audit has found.

There was an unacceptably high risk that spilt oil could damage the marine fauna and the shore surrounding the jetty, the audit found. read more

Daily Independent (Nigeria): Oil communities seek gas flares end by 2006

“One of the oil majors, Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), recently shifted its date to end the problematic gas flaring to 2009 ending from the earlier proposed 2008 date.”

Voices of dissent appear to herald moves by oil multinationals to end gas flaring in the Niger Delta area in three years time, with several of the oil communities preferring a 2006 date.

One of the oil majors, Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), recently shifted its date to end the problematic gas flaring to 2009 ending from the earlier proposed 2008 date.

The latest claim by Oilwatch Africa, a network of environmental human rights groups, revealed that most oil communities in the region are pushing for an end to gas flares not later than 2006. read more

Irish Times: Call for Corrib gas hearing to end impasse

The Green Party has called for a full oral hearing into the Corrib onshore gas pipeline in an attempt to break the impasse over the imprisonment of five Mayo residents.

The north Mayo men opposed to the pipeline are now spending their 11th week in prison and are due back in court on October 4th.

Shell has rejected recent appeals by both Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny and Labour Party leader Pat Rabbitte to lift its injunction secured against the objecting landowners. read more

Irish Independent: Pipeline pressure

Irish Independent: Pipeline pressure

“It says a lot about the way Ireland is being run when people’s safety is disregarded in favour of a multinational corporation’s interests and people are jailed by the State for voicing those concerns.”

Monday Sep 12, 2005

Sir – Well done to David McKittick for highlighting the issues involved in the dispute between Shell and the Rossport Five (Features). If the claims are true about the possible pressures in the pipeline, then in my opinion the men are justified in their safety concerns. Shell state that the pipe pressure may never reach 345 bar, but even a quarter of that is a very high pressure. To put it into context, a car tyre would only go to about 20 bar. You can imagine what sort of a bang you would get if a pipe joint failed at say 100 bar. Add to that the fact that you are dealing with a flammable gas and anyone can see the dangers. Would you like this in your back garden? Would this have been brought ashore off the coast of Dublin, through Blackrock for example? I think not. Why was it even given planning permission? read more

Shell Ties Woes Of Russia Project To Lack of Data

The Wall Street Journal: Shell Ties Woes Of Russia Project To Lack of Data

“Executives at the Royal Dutch Shell PLC-led Sakhalin II project, a Russian oil and natural-gas project that Shell said in July could cost $20 billion, or roughly €16 billion, twice as much as expected, partly attribute the overruns and delays to going ahead with insufficient information.”

YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK – Executives at the Royal Dutch Shell PLC-led Sakhalin II project, a Russian oil and natural-gas project that Shell said in July could cost $20 billion, or roughly €16 billion, twice as much as expected, partly attribute the overruns and delays to going ahead with insufficient information.

In interviews, managers at the Shell-led joint venture said this meant the company didn’t properly model the geology of the area and was unprepared for the effect of ice on the pipeline and environmental concerns. Shell already said in July that overly optimistic assumptions by its managers led to the revised costs and schedule. The company also said then that industrywide cost inflation and unforeseen technical and environmental challenges had a role. read more

ROYAL DUTCH SHELL ROBBERS AND RASCALS

FROM OUR AUGUST 2005 SHELL NEWS ARCHIVE

ROYAL DUTCH SHELL ROBBERS AND RASCALS

“…Shell shareholders have to foot the bill for lawyers fees run up in the course of defending fat cat crooks, such as Sir Phillip Watts, the disgraced former Group Chairman of the Royal Dutch Shell Group. Sir Phillip ended up with a $18 million USD pension pot AND with all his ongoing legal fees being paid by Shell shareholders. This was after he had LIED AND COVERED UP THE TRUTH ABOUT SHELL’S RESERVES, AND IN THE PROCESS, DESTROYED SHELL’S REPUTATION”

By Alfred Donovan: Monday 12 Sept 2005

The press is having a field day in devising colourful headlines about the scandal ridden Royal Dutch Shell Group. An article in “The Sunday Times” yesterday had a story under the headline: “Shell move robs UK investors”. It reported on the horrendous tax implications for UK Royal Dutch shareholders resulting from the recent Royal Dutch/Shell unification and the dubious way in which Shell has dealt with the controversy thus far.

Yesterdays “Independent on Sunday” used the term “Clever Rascals” about Shell in a headline relating to the Sakhalin project in Russia and the potential ramifications in respect of the critically endangered western grey whale. For the record, the Encarta Online Dictionary definition of a “rascal” is: “dishonest person: somebody, especially a man, who is dishonest or otherwise unethical”. read more
