Reuters: FEATURE-Beaufort Sea oil plans raise hopes, fears

“…Shell’s decision to aggressively pursue Beaufort Sea oil prospects, largely off the coast of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, worries some North Slope Inupiat Eskimos who have long opposed any oil development in the waters used by migrating whales and other marine mammals.”

ANCHORAGE, Sept 6 (Reuters) – For years, the ice-choked waters off Alaska’s Arctic coastline were considered too expensive, too forbidding and too controversial to deserve much oil industry attention.

But now one major company, after dropping over $44 million earlier this year for exploration rights, is eyeing offshore oil prospects in the Beaufort Sea as the base for long-term and large-scale Alaska operations.

As gasoline prices reach record levels, exacerbated by the impact of Hurricane Katrina on distribution and supply in North America, the oil industry is taking another look at opening up new sources of oil. read more

Storm-hit Gulf energy industry struggles back

AFX Europe (Focus): Storm-hit Gulf energy industry struggles back – UPDATE 2

The 226,000 bpd Motiva/Shell refinery at Norco, La., was still reported down but suffered limited storm damage and may be able to restart as soon as mid-week, the Energy Department said.”

SAN FRANCISCO (AFX) – A week after Hurricane Katrina pounded the Gulf of Mexico there was growing evidence Tuesday that the industry is regaining its footing, with offshore energy production rising and key pipelines again up and running.

Recovery from the storm by the region’s hard-hit refineries also improved, though industry officials warned that up to 5% of the nation’s refining capacity could be out of commission for weeks – perhaps months in the worst cases. read more

Shell and E.ON to Build 1,000 MW Wind Power Plant in UK

RedNova.com: Shell and E.ON to Build 1,000 MW Wind Power Plant in UK

Wednesday 7 Sept 2005

Shell (UK/Netherlands), oil concern, and the power concern E.ON (Germany) plan to jointly build a 1,000 MW wind power plant on the UK coast. The oil concern BP (UK) is engaged in solar power engineering. Besides, oil concerns invest in biofuel production and study the use of hydrogen as an energy resource

Until recently, investments in alternative resources were unprofitable. It will take long before alternative resources can cover at least a part of the growing demand for energies worldwide. It is expected that oil production will culminate around 2030 at the latest in terms of volume. It will not disappear from the market then either, but mining from big depths in oil sands or slates will be much more expensive. Shell claims that renewable energy resources will cover roughly one third of global energy consumption around 2050. However, the demand for energies will be up to three times as high as it is in 2005. read more

Independent: Ballad of the Rossport five

Independent: Ballad of the Rossport five

The men held in Ireland’s Cloverhill prison now have not only their own title – the Rossport Five – but their own ballad as well, which lauds their gallantry and decries the energy giant Shell as an “ignoble predator”.

“The campaign received a boost in recent months when it was revealed that consultants brought in by the government were not independent, as had been claimed, and in fact had connections with Shell.”

Wednesday 7 Sept 2005

It is David versus Goliath as residents of Mayo try to halt Shell’s efforts to bring Ireland’s gas ashore. They say the oil giant’s plans are unsafe – and five protesters are now in jail.
