Calgary – Royal Dutch Shell PLC is looking to bid for EnCana Corp., market speculators say, and one senior analyst predicts there is a 50-per-cent chance that Shell will make a major move in the next year.

“It would establish Shell clearly and squarely as the No. 1 natural gas producer in North America, by far the most lucrative market anybody would want to be in,” analyst Fadel Gheit at Oppenheimer & Co. in New York said in an interview Thursday. read more

Shell has been forced to pay out $9.2m (pounds 5m) in legal fees and make changes to its corporate governance structure as part of a settlement with disgruntled shareholders.

The case pending in New York and New Jersey courts followed the January 2004 statement from Shell that it had overstated its oil and gas reserves in filings with the US regulator, the securities and exchange commission.

ROYAL Dutch Shell is set to pay $9.2m to settle another shareholder lawsuit in the US as it works to close off the remaining fallout from its 2004 reserves scandal, writes Martyn Wingrove.

The Anglo-Dutch oil major, which recently unified its ownership and listing, has reached a settlement with US shareholders on their derivative action that was set up to force the company into corporate changes.

The actions pending in the federal courts of New York and New Jersey sought to assert claims against current and former members of the board and were looking for changes in corporate structure and governance. read more
