Shell emits over 6m tonnes of C02 into Nigerian environment

By Clara Nwachukwu: APRIL 17, 2012

Anglo Dutch Shell has confessed to emitting as much as 6.1million tonnes of carbon dioxide, C02, into the Nigerian environment during oil and gas operations in 2011.

The admission comes, even as the international community continues to raise alarm on the effect of such emissions on humans, plants and animals in terms of increased global warning and attendant health hazards on the people.

Shell in its 2011 Sustainability Report posted on its official website said the current flare rate was, however, almost 20 percent reduction over the 2010 figures. read more

News Shell oil spill off Nigeria likely worst in decade

By JON GAMBRELL, Associated Press 22 December 2011

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — An oil spill near the coast of Nigeria is likely the worst to hit those waters in a decade, a government official said Thursday, as slicks from the Royal Dutch Shell PLC spill approached the country’s southern shoreline.

The slick from Shell’s Bonga field has affected 115 miles (185 kilometers) of ocean near Nigeria’s coast, Peter Idabor, who leads the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, told The Associated Press. Idabor said officials expect the slick to reach beaches by Thursday afternoon. read more

Motiva Enterprises toxic environmental record

The following information is in the form of extracts from a recent report produced by Louisiana Bucket Brigade environmental health and justice organization.

Louisiana refineries averaged one accident per day in 2010. There was a total of 354 reported accidents which released more than 975,000 pounds and 225,000 gallons of pollution.

Refineries rely too heavily on contract workers. There are simply not enough full-time workers on staff. Deferred maintenance and inadequate safety management significantly contributed to accidents, according to refineries’ own reports and testimony from the United Steelworkers.

During 2010, Motiva’s refinery in Norco reported seven accidents involving the same DU-5 unit, resulting in a total of 18,500 pounds of emissions. The largest accident happened in January, when a fire resulted in the shutdown of three refinery units, one worker injury and more than 17,000 pounds of toxic air emissions, including sulfur dioxide. read more

A toxic legacy in Curacao

Curacao and its oil refinery

Curacao is an island in the southern Caribbean Sea, off the Venezuelan coast. It is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and has a land area of 444 square kilometres. As of January 2010, its population amounted to around 142,000 people. Prior to 10 October 2010, when the Netherlands Antilles were dissolved, Curacao was administered as the Island Territory of Curacao, one of five island territories of the former Netherlands Antilles.

From 1918 until 1985, Shell owned and operated the Isla oil refinery in Curacao. During this period, the refinery has been one of the most important lifelines of Curacao. For example, in the early fifties it employed more than 12,000 people out of the total island population of 110,000 people. The refinery generated the foreign exchange necessary to finance the imports the island could not produce itself.  In the beginning of the eighties, Shell-companies provided for 33% of the island’s Gross National Product. Apart from the refinery, Shell had a local sales company, an oil storage/transshipment company, and a shipping company on the island. Shell was very important to Curacao, and the government of Curacao treated Shell kindly. In 1980, a former director of Shell declared towards a reporter of the Dutch newspaper NRC: “The Antillean government? We were that government.” read more

Shell set to plug leak that created pond at oilsands mine

Never-seen-before problem shows importance of additional seismic work in areas earmarked for mining

By Dave Cooper, edmontonjournal.com October 14, 2011

The flooded pit at Shell’s Muskeg River mine now holds about seven million cubic metres of salty water after a deep crack formed in the rock below the mined-out area last year, allowing water from a deep aquifer to flow upwards. It was the first time an oilsands firm has faced such a situation. Shell is building a drilling pad in the pond and will inject hot asphalt and then cement into the crack to permanently seal the leak next year. Photograph by: Shell Canada, edmontonjournal.com

Shell Motiva release of carcinogenic chemical at Norco plant

By John Donovan

18 September 2011

Bloomberg has reported the release of a carcinogenic chemical –  butadiene – by Shell/Motiva at its Norco plant in Louisiana.

Butadiene is listed as a known carcinogen by the Agency for Toxic Substances Disease Registry and the US EPA. At acute high exposure, damage to the central nervous system will start to occur. Symptoms such as distorted blurred vision, vertigo, general tiredness, decreased blood pressure, headache, nausea, decreased pulse rate, and fainting may be witnessed. As the exposure to butadiene occurs at a higher level and for a longer duration, the effects witnessed will become more serious. (INFORMATION FROM WIKIPEDIA) read more

Shell’s failure to protect Nigeria pipeline ‘led to sabotage’

Shell Nigeria’s declaration this week that it cannot meet its international commitment to export 300,000 barrels a day of crude oil was caused by the company withdrawing contracts to pay people to monitor and protect the pipeline, Shell and independent reports indicate.

Shell Nigeria‘s declaration this week that it cannot meet its international commitment to export 300,000 barrels a day of crude oil was caused by the company withdrawing contracts to pay people to monitor and protect the pipeline, Shell and independent reports indicate.

Nine oil spills in three weeks along one pipeline in the Niger Delta have forced Shell Nigeria to declare that it cannot meet its international contracts to export 300,000 barrels a day of crude oil.

Nine oil spills in three weeks along the Adibawa-Okordia pipeline in the Niger Delta are believed to be the result of sabotage by disaffected youths using hacksaws. An unknown quantity of oil has been lost and, since 2 August, fishing grounds and farmland have been polluted . With three more spills reported in the last 24 hours it appears that the company has now lost some control of the pipeline. read more

Nigeria’s oil-tainted Ogoni weary of blame game

AUSTIN EKEINDE OGONILAND, NIGERIA – Aug 24 2011 18:01

Skillfully scooping water from beneath a thick black carpet of crude, veteran Nigerian fisherman Suagelo Kpalap gives a shrug of resignation at the mention of the latest twist in an oil spill blame game he’s watched for decades.

A United Nations (UN) report released in August told Kpalap and the other inhabitants of Ogoniland, a region within the vast, oil-rich Niger Delta, what they’ve known for years — their environment is dangerously polluted and Royal Dutch Shell and the government aren’t doing enough to clean it up.

“Oil spills have wasted my life, my environment and livelihood. There isn’t much for me to enjoy at my age,” the 57-year old said, wiping oil-stained hands on ragged clothes. “My fishing nets are all soaked in oil, I don’t have money to get new ones and my canoes have been destroyed by the spills.” read more

Royal Dutch Shell blames 6 recent spills in Nigeria’s oil-rich delta on ‘sabotage’

By Associated Press, Updated: Monday, August 22, 6:35 PM

LAGOS, Nigeria — Six recent oil spills from a Royal Dutch Shell PLC pipeline running through Nigeria’s oil-rich southern delta were the result of “sabotage,” the company said Monday, blaming another nearby spill on a similar attack.

Shell’s comments come after someone set fire to the spreading spill in recent days, and as a U.N. report suggests it could take as much as 30 years to clean another region of the country’s Niger Delta.

Shell has blamed the majority of recent spills on oil thieves and militants roaming the delta’s winding creeks. Environmentalists and locals blame the oil company for 50 years of poverty and pollution there. read more

Shell has admitted that there are hundreds of tonnes of additional oil in the pipeline that has been leaking for a week in the North Sea.

The estimate was revealed as Shell continues to try to stem the flow on the seabed near the Gannet Alpha platform, about 112 miles east of Aberdeen.

Since the leak started last Wednesday, more than 200 tonnes of oil has spilled into the North Sea, making it the worst single leak in the region for more than a decade.

The initial large leak was stopped the following day, but it later emerged that a smaller flow from the same source had been detected. read more

Anger as Shell fails to answer questions about spillage

Shell’s modus operandi – of giving out information only on what appears to be a need-to-know basis – is not good enough. The public needs to know, and has a right to know.

Published Date: 16 August 2011 By Jenny Fyall Environment Correspondent
ENERGY giant Shell is facing mounting criticism over its secrecy about an oil leak in the North Sea, as the spill was revealed to be twice as large as previously thought. Five days after the leak from the Gannet Alpha rig was spotted about 112 miles east of Aberdeen, Shell finally responded to pressure to reveal the volumes of oil involved.

It confirmed 216 tonnes had spread into the sea – the equivalent of 1,300 barrels of oil. The Scottish Government said at the weekend it involved only about 100 tonnes.

However, a raft of questions today remain unanswered, including how the leak started, why Shell has not yet been able to stop the flow of oil, where exactly the spill is in the North Sea, and whether any seabirds or other wildlife are caught up in it.

Politicians and environment groups have increased their calls for Shell to be more open about the leak. Government figures show it is four times the entire quantity of oil discharged into the North Sea in 2009, and by far the largest spill in UK waters for more than a decade. read more

MOSOP challenges integrity of UNEP Report

Press Statement issued by Dr. Goodluck Diigbo MOSOP President/Spokesman

AUGUST 5, 2011

At a MOSOP Emergency General Meeting in Bori, headquarters of Ogoniland on August 4, 2011, MOSOP welcomes the increased awareness the UNEP report on Ogoniland is likely to create about the continued threat of possible extinction to the Ogoni people arising from oil operations in the past 55 years. However, MOSOP resolves to dispute the integrity of the UNEP Report on Ogoniland, which was paid for with $9.5 million by the polluters, including Royal-Dutch/Shell.

MOSOP President/Spokesman, Dr. Goodluck Diigbo, says MOSOP is challenging the integrity of the report, recalling an earlier confession by UNEP team leader Mike Cowing that the report has been informed by data and information solely supplied by Shell and the government, without actual study on the ground. The purported UNEP meeting with 23,000 Ogonis is only on paper, and there is no evidence to prove who attended, what review was done, agreements reached, if any and Ogonis who signed such agreements as proof of public participation as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment Study, EIAS due process. read more

Benzene Contamination Fears in Roxana Illinois

Maria Keena June 22, 2011 1:54 AM

ROXANA, IL (KMOX) – Twenty-five years later, the Village of Roxana Illinois is being tested for known Benzene contamination. In 19-86 nearly nine-thousand gallons of Benzene leaked into the ground from a Shell Refinery pipeline. Connoco Phillips now runs the refinery, but Shell is still assuming the responsibility.

Last night,  dozens of residents heard from the Illinois E-P-A and Department of Public Health about the contaminated areas. Property owner and life long resident Dale Carroll says over a year ago, test wells were being drilled around Roxana and it was all very hush, hush. But Carroll is not surprised. In 1986, he owned a building right where the Benzene spill happened and it was not until 19-99 that the City of Roxana terminated Carroll’s lease and bought him out. Since then, the building has been vacant. read more

The gas flares of Nigeria

Below the surface, crude oil is often found mixed with natural gas. The natural gas must be separated from the oil during extraction. Technically the gas can easily be captured and utilized. In Nigeria, however, the associated gas is primitively flared in the open air. Rushing for oil exports in the 1960s and 1970s, Shell and the Nigerian government only built oil pipelines. They didn’t care about infrastructure to utilize the valuable natural gas: just burn it. There are currently approximately 100 continuously burning gas flares in the Niger Delta and just offshore, some of which have been burning since the early 1960s. read more

Shell in Nigeria

In oil production, Nigeria is the most important country for Shell. During the period 2006-2010, Nigeria accounted for about 16% of Shell’s worldwide production of oil and liquid natural gas. During the year 2009, production falls due to disrupting activities by militant groups in the Niger Delta reached their peak for the time being. SAVE OUR SOULS-SHELL IS SLOWLY DESTROYING AGUOBIRI COMMUNITY

The oil giant, Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) led pipeline through Aguobiri Community in 1973 and since then, the community has never benefited and is not even considered by SPDC in their community programs.

Shell Reports ‘Unplanned’ Flaring At Martinez Refinery

By John Donovan

According to  an article published on 25 February 2011 by The Wall Street Journal, Royal Dutch Shell Plc has recently reported “unplanned” flaring at its Martinez refinery in California.

Shell has a track record of illegal emissions at the refinery, paying fines totaling over $25 million since 1989.

On 1 December 1989, The New York Times reported that Shell Oil Company had agreed to pay $19.75 million “for spilling more than 400,000 gallons of crude oil into San Francisco Bay”. Shell said that it had “spent an additional $14 million in cleaning up the spill, when oil flowed from a pipe at its Martinez refinery in April 1988”. Oil leaked out from a 12.5-million-gallon storage tank at the manufacturing complex 40 miles northeast of San Francisco. The Government said that several Federal regulations were broken. According to the article at least 250 birds and 50 other animals were found dead and a valuable wildlife habitat was ruined and tidal marshlands would take 10 years to recover. read more

Indigenous Ecuadoran woman humbles US oil giant

By Valeria Pacheco AFP 24 Feb 2011

RUMIPAMBA, Ecuador — She has no legal training, and doesn’t speak the Spanish that dominates government in Quito but indigenous villager Maria Aguinda helped bring a landmark judgment against US oil giant Chevron for polluting the rain forest she calls home.

The diminutive grandmother whose modest home sits near marshes clogged for decades in sticky oil has been at the heart of the David-and-Goliath case, and spoke out after Chevron was slapped last week with a $9.5-billion fine, among the heaviest ever handed down for environmental damage.

“Before I die they have to pay me for the dead animals, and for what they did to the river, and the water and the earth,” the 61-year-old Aguinda told AFP at her home in Rumipamba, a town in remote Orellana province where pollution caused by 30 years of oil drilling and petroleum accidents had become a sad fact of life. read more

Shell and BP named in benzene suit

By Andrea Dearden

The family of a Bethalto woman who died of leukemia blames two Roxana oil refiners for allegedly causing the disease.

Jeffrey Ochs, on behalf of his wife Debra Ochs, and the couple’s daughter filed a lawsuit Jan. 20 in Madison County Circuit Court against Shell Oil Company and BP Products North America Inc.

Ochs says Debra spent a lot of time in Roxana the last three decades, working as a teacher and principal at Central Elementary from 1994 through 2003. During that time, Shell and BP operated refineries in the area. read more

Carson’s Carousel residents frustrated at Regional Water Board, Shell Oil over toxic soil

Molly Peterson/KPCC: Residents of Carson’s Carousel neighborhood voiced anger and frustration at a public meeting Thursday, where water regulators said they’re readying a cleanup order for soil contamination under their houses.

Officials at the regional water quality control board say they’re almost ready with a cleanup order for the Carousel neighborhood of Carson. Some residents of the Carousel neighborhood are greeting those plans with anger and criticism.

Environmental testing has revealed toxic soil contamination under hundreds of homes on land where Shell Oil once ran a tank farm. read more

Dutch Documentary: The dirty oil from Shell

By John Donovan

The Dutch Parliament recently held a hearing on the activities of Shell in Nigeria, partly in response to this 38 minute documentary  by the Dutch TV programme “*Zembla”: The dirty oil from Shell.

The eyes of the world have been focused on the Gulf of Mexico, where BP took several months to stop an oil leak deep under the sea surface. In the meantime, a 50 year oil disaster is happening in Nigeria.. Since SHELL started their hunt for oil in Nigeria, an estimated 1.5 million barrels of oil have flowed into groundwater, drinking water and rivers. The population wants it to stop. The activity has generated billions in profits for the leading Dutch/British oil company, but it is accused of environmental and human rights abuse. read more

OIL POLITICS: The Emperor with no clothes

next

By Nnimmo Bassey: January 27, 2011 03:21AMT

The Dutch parliament yesterday placed the Royal Dutch Shell before the mirror in a groundbreaking act of scrutiny over the severe environmental and social footprint of the oil giant on the Niger Delta.

Shell may be the only one being grilled but that does not by any means suggest that the likes of Chevron, Exxon, ENI and Total are not mired in the serial abuses in the region. The spotlight at The Hague needs to be replicated in Washington, Rome, Paris, Oslo, and elsewhere.  read more

Floodgates open on bad news for Royal Dutch Shell

FROM A SHELL INSIDER

John

Looks like you opened some floodgates on bad news for Shell the last few weeks! I don’t understand how you can keep up with all the dataflows.

The recent note from the Canadian operator is pretty serious. This obviously is a man who knows what he talks about and has high personal standards.

Shell Canada Insider Speaks Out

Exactly the type of person you would want on your plant, but dangerous and awkward for many managers who are looking for quick bucks, low hanging fruit, early success, breakthrough performance, olympic targets and whatever other jargon is used to cut costs…. I don’t know if you are aware just how toxic H2S is. Often in communications to the general public it is related to the smell of rotten eggs but in reality it is as toxic as Hydrogen Cyanide – HCN (Prussic Acid), the stuff used in detective novels…. (And by the way in the gaschambers in Germany as well as in the suicide capsules they used). read more

Royal Dutch Shell and the lampshades made from HUMAN SKIN

The Sun newspaper has published an article horrifically confirming, following a DNA test, that a lampshade bought at a New Orleans car boot sale is made from human skin. A gruesome relic from Nazi crimes against humanity in the 2nd World War. As the main financier of the Nazis, does Royal Dutch Shell bear any moral (or legal) responsibility for the crimes of Hitler and his equally evil henchmen?

Extract:

We’ve all heard the stories of the Nazi human lampshades.

There have been many fakes over the years but no proven examples of a real Nazi lamp made from the skin of Jewish prisoners in concentration camps during the Second World War.

However, one crucial early scientific test set this lamp apart.

When Mark, an American, sent a small piece away for DNA testing at Bode Technology near Washington DC it came back as “100 per cent human”.

Royal Dutch Shell had no involvement in the concentration camps, but driven by greed, the company did in the crucial years prior to the 2nd World War, save the Nazi party from financial collapse and continue to pump funds into the Nazi regime in a variety of ways.
Greed and fat cat egotism won out over mere moral considerations. Shell knowingly collaborated directly with Hitler and the Nazis – the most evil regime in history. Without Shell’s financial backing, history might have unfolded without the horrors of the 2nd World War.
What transpired all those years ago obviously has no reflection on current Shell employees, the vast majority of whom are decent hard working people.
Those events do however stain forever the name of Royal Dutch Shell and the brand name by which the company is best known throughout the world: Shell.
As a result of a recent article published in the Guardian, we now know that as a consequence of Shell’s association in the death of Ken Saro Wiwi and eight other Nigerians hanged with him also on trumped up charges, Shell seriously considered changing the brand to “New Shell”. Shell settled out-of-court for $15.5 million a related claim in the U.S. courts last year alleging human rights violations and torture.
Extract from a BBC article: Shell settles Nigeria deaths case
The case alleged that Shell was complicit in murder, torture and other abuses by Nigeria’s former military government against campaigners in the oil-rich Niger Delta. Shell had propped up an evil corrupt Nigeria dictator so that it could continue its plunder and pollution in the Niger Delta.   Now the latest crop of Shell fat cats are pumping funds into another fanatical regime, this time in Iran. Once again, greed for hydrocarbon reserves is taking priority over ethical considerations. Shell is acting with typical deception to hide what is going on. Shipping movements have been disguised.   Once again Royal Dutch Shell is pumping funds into a fanatical regime intent on the extermination of the Jewish people. Iran is bent on developing nuclear weapons to destroy Israel, finishing the job that Shell’s former Nazi partners embarked upon, killing millions of Jews in the Holocaust. (see Royal Dutch Shell Iranian treachery)   The latest *Wikileaks revelations will only increase concern about those few remaining companies putting their own interests before the safety of the growing number of people living in Countries under threat of Iranian rockets, partly fueled by Shell.   The future looks dark and foreboding. What will be the consequences this time?   How long before Royal Dutch Shell decides it might be best to change its name?     ARTICLE BY ALFRED DONOVAN AND JOHN DONOVAN

Donna Getz allegations against Shell

The following information is generated from emails received from Donna Getz, who makes self explanatory allegations against Shell and other parties.

BY DONNA GETZ

Read your articles about Royal Dutch Shell.  It makes me sick what they can get away with.

I am going to tell you what happened to myself and my family.

We were caretaking a ranch near Tumbler Ridge, BC about six years ago. We were looking after their horses and ours. We never received payment for this.

Unknown to us, Shell Oil was drilling a well 3 km across country from us.

When they started to flare the well, something went wrong.  We got hurt from this. The spruce trees had golden patches on them, the leaves on the cottonwood turned upside down, the game left or died. Four of our horses died over time from this and we have one that is still wheezing from it. I have 30% lungs left, my husband and daughter 50% left.  Our truck we had at the time, rusted out on one side. read more

Why We Mustn’t Allow Shell to Go… to America’s Arctic Seas

Shell wants to go quite far, all the way to the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas of Arctic Alaska to get the oil that is there. And they want you to support them in their journey, which is why they say, “Let’s Go.”

THE HUFFINGTON POST

Subhankar Banerjee: Photographer, writer, activist, founder ClimateStoryTellers.org

Last Sunday, after I posted my most recent blog, “Climate Educators Wanted,” I visited the Green page in HuffPost. My eyes lit up. Before my eyes, the GREENscape slowly turned into a story. Stories are nothing but fragments from life put together. Here’s how this story came together.

About midway down the left column, my earlier post, “Letter to Young Americans” was still visible. Right above it was a Shell oil ad. The ad and the story each occupied an equal amount of space, so that was a good beginning. Here is a quick read: the ad says, “Let’s Go,” asking all of us to join in. The story asks all young people to join in. The ad says, “Go Further,” telling us to progress into the future. The story says, “Start the climate revolution now,” for the purpose of a brighter future. The ad and the story outwardly appear to be saying the same thing and peacefully cohabiting in the HuffPo GREENscape. read more

Brazil Court Fines Shell, Basf for Making Workers Sick

The plant was built in 1977 by Shell… Dozens of former employees of the plant have been diagnosed with prostate, thyroid and other types of cancer, circulatory, liver and intestinal illnesses, as well as infertility and sexual impotence, the statement added.

Caracas, Saturday August 21,2010

SAO PAULO – A Brazilian court has ordered the local units of Basf SE and Royal Dutch Shell Plc to pay 1.1 billion reais ($628 million) to cover the cost of medical treatment and compensation for former workers made ill by toxic substances.

The sentence, which can be appealed, was handed down by Judge Maria Ines Correa de Cerqueira Cesar of the labor court in Paulinia, Sao Paulo state, where a pesticide plant operated between 1977-2002.

The judge ordered the companies to pay the cost of medical treatment for all of plant’s former workers, as well as for the children of employees or contractors who were born during or after the time their parents worked at the factory. read more

HOW I LEARNED TO QUIT WORRYING AND LOVE SHELL PESTICIDES

And then came the the Dieldrin/Aldrin pesticide revelations a decade later. OOPS. As it happened to be 99+% of all Americans had measurable amounts of Shell’s favorite (and very carcinogenic) pesticide in their bodies. As it happened to be, America was being poisoned, slowly but surely.

By a former employee of Shell Oil USA

When I was a kid a movie came out that was one of Stanley Kubrick and Peter Sellers best pieces of work. It is called: Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.

This movie is a dark satire about a crazed American Air Force General (played by Sterling Hayden) that goes looney tunes and launches a nuclear B-52 bomber strike against Russia. This nutcase General is obsessed with what he believes to be poisoning of America by the Commies through the addition of fluorine to drinking water. The fluorine is poisoning our ‘precious bodily fluids’. Slowly, but surely. Of course, everybody knows he is a nutcase and the Commies weren’t poisoning America. The movie ends in nuclear Armageddon. Sellers had a number of roles, including one as an ex-Nazi nutcase scientist. read more

Halliburton Settles Cheney-Era Bribery Probe With U.S. Government

Gen. Abacha’s appreciation for the money that Shell’s operations put into his coffers made him an eager ally when the oil industry faced popular protests, which were crushed by the dictator’s army and security forces. 1995, the year Cheney joined Halliburton, renowned writer and environmental advocate Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight of his colleagues were hanged by the Abacha government for their efforts to prevent Shell from continuing to poison the environment of the Niger Delta. It is estimated that more than 2,000 people have been murdered for their involvement in protests against Shell’s activities in the Delta. Most of those murdered were Ogoni who had rallied behind Saro-Wiwa in the early 1990s.
