Age discrimination at Shell Motiva Port Arthur Refinery?

They would target the individuals they wanted to get rid of and then they would pressure them to accept the severance package.

FROM A POSTING ON OUR SHELL BLOG BY “oldwhitemaleon Mar 26th, 2012

I recently read on this website about the employee at Motiva Port Arthur who has a pending lawsuit against Motiva Port Arthur for age discrimination.

I’ve seen Motiva Norco use this same practice for years. The people that were usually offered severance packages were white male employees over 50 years old. They informed them that they were poor performers or redundant in their job position and that if they didn’t accept the severance package they would likely be terminated at a later date and not be offered the severance package. read more

Motiva Enterprises Port Arthur refinery is aiming for completion of its massive Crude Expansion Project, worth at least $7 billion. The project sought to more than double the size of the refinery to a daily capacity of 600,000 barrels of product.

Refinery spokeswoman Verna Rutherford said although some units are still under construction, other units have been completed and are in the process of being handed over to operations at the refinery, with product-in-tank in the first quarter of 2012. read more

HOUSTON, June 13 (Reuters) – Motiva Enterprises LLC is already preparing to expand the capacity of its Port Arthur, Texas, refinery beyond 600,000 barrels per day (bpd), which the plant will reach early next year when a giant construction project is completed, according to refinery sources.

A Motiva spokeswoman declined to comment on the refinery’s long-term plans.

Motiva has also begun tying in units built in the past four years as part of that $5 billion capital project to boost the refinery’s capacity beyond the current 285,000 bpd, the sources said. read more

Age discrimination suit filed against Motiva

By David Yates

Tyler resident Kurt Floersheim has filed suit against his former employer, Motiva Enterprises, alleging he was laid off so that two younger men could replace him.

The suit was filed April 15 in Jefferson County District Court.

According to the lawsuit, on June 15, 2009, Motiva informed Floersheim that he was being included in a reduction in force. He alleges that the day after he was laid off, Motiva hired two younger specialists to replace him.

“Defendant’s selection process for its reduction in force resulted in the three oldest engineers being laid off (ages 50-65),” the suit states. “No process engineers under 40 were laid off.” read more

Shell Motiva VP Tom Purves falls victim to his own Game

By Joe Blow

It was with some elation that I heard of Mr. Purves’ fall from grace with his superiors. In fact I popped the cork on a fine bottle of wine that I have been saving for just such an occasion.  As I sipped my wine and imagined what must have happened, many theories ran through my mind, “Did Botts suddenly grow a brain”, “Did Williams realize what an idiot Purves was”, “Did Voser finally listen to the people”.  Unfortunately for so many, this is a measure of justice, not the absolute Justice we deserve. read more

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Motiva Enterprises LLC (RDSA, RDSA.LN) Wednesday filed an emissions event report to Texas state environmental regulators stating that an early-day power outage slowed or shut several processing units.

The power interruption occurred just after 3:00 a.m. CDT and was caused by a fire at an electrical pole, the report to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality said.

“Individual units followed start-up, shutdown and maintenance procedures to safely stabilize unit operations, and minimize emissions,” the filing said, but it was unclear whether operations had returned to normal. read more

March 2 (Bloomberg) — The U.S. Supreme Court bolstered the ability of oil companies to change their leases with independent service station owners, blocking a Massachusetts lawsuit against Shell Oil Co. and Motiva Enterprises LLC.

The Supreme Court today unanimously said the suit by a group of station owners can’t go forward under the U.S. Petroleum Marketing Practices Act, a 1978 law that gave independent station owners more power in their dealings with oil companies. read more

Motivaman for president!

Motiva Enterprises LLC Convent Refinery

Overnight postings by Motivaman

OK, lets talk a little about a few things going on at Motiva, Convent.

First, my last post, which was over a month ago, was about a salary person violating a few of the 12 rules and nothing being done about it. Well another salary guy was caught violating the 12 rules, he was caught taking pictures in a unit without signing in or having a permit. This time Motiva terminated the employee. He was caught violating only one rule unlike the prior incident. Why was this treated different? No one knows. We have a definite inconsistency in the discipline of  these rules. I hate for anyone to loose their job, but I think this the handling of this is more along the lines of what should have been done with the prior incident. I have heard the guy whom was let go last week has lawyered up and will sue because he was fired while others were not. Motiva management is playing favorites and I’m glad they are about to get burnt! read more

US Justice Department continues investigation of BAE Systems Al-Yamamah arms deal

Royal Dutch Shell and BP played pivotal roles in the "oil for arms" deal said to be the biggest scandal in history. We have published evidence including declassified documents revealing details of the top secret agreements involving the UK government, BAE Systems, Shell, BP, and members of the Saudi Royal family. The US Justice Department investigation is highly sensitive and the outcome potentially explosive for Shell in view of its close relationship with the state owned oil company Saudi Aramco, involving joint ventures in the USA under the Shell/Motiva umbrella.

I am happy to see the activity and posts that continue to populate this site, some I agree with fully, some I see as having merit although the message is mired in a barrage of pointless bashing of all staff folks.

First I would like to comment on Paddy’s most recent posting, very insightful, and well written, I agree with you on many of your points, however I do not believe Shell will divest its entire downstream refining business.  I do believe the portfolio will look very different in the near future.  I believe you will see a large push within Shell/Motiva to focus on its larger most complex facilities, these facilities are best positioned on the surface to weather the times ahead in the oil industry.  I say on the surface because any business arm that resides in the middle or the end of any supply chain oriented business must be cost competitive.  Lets face it folks, in downstream we still are subject to market price for our feedstock, this in itself tells us that in order to be competitive we have to work our magic at competitive cost to be able to then sell our finished products (again at a market price) for a profit.  So even a large complex facility will have no position in the portfolio if it can not accomplish this.  I think this next point is the one most missed among many in the downstream businesses. As a large integrated oil company, exploration and production of crude is the future that drives the desire to have a downstream business. Pay attention to the word “Desire”, having a downstream business is not a necessity, upstream can simply market its feedstock on the open market and still fare well. read more

Saudi Aramco at 75

I take special pride in mentioning that Motiva - our joint venture with Shell here in the U.S. - broke ground in December 2007 on a $7 billion project to expand its refinery in Port Arthur, Texas. Upon completion in 2010, this investment will provide 325,000 barrels per day of additional gasoline and other petroleum products to U.S. domestic markets. The expansion will increase the refinery's crude throughput capacity to 600,000 barrels per day, making it the largest U.S. refinery. In addition, the project is expected to generate over 4,500 construction jobs and as many as 300 new permanent jobs upon completion.
