NEW YORK (Dow Jones) -The Motiva Port Arthur refinery operated by Shell Oil reported that the fluid catalytic cracking unit went offline due to equipment failure Friday morning, according to a filing submitted to state environmental regulators.
The FCCU, a key gasoline making unit, shut down after a series of processes malfunctioned. At about 9:22 a.m. CST on Jan. 8, a transmitter in a boiler failed and allowed water to flow into a high pressure system to the FCCU and other units. That water caused the FCCU’s wet gas compressor to trip and the lift air blower to shut, which caused the entire FCCU unit to shut down, the report said.
“Operators stabilized the unit and put the unit into circulation,” the company stated. Shell declined to comment about the status of the FCCU or the broader impact on refinery operations for competitive reasons. The incident caused flaring activity to burn off emissions that lasted until early Saturday morning.
The Motiva Port Arthur refinery, 50% joint venture between units of Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDSA, RDSA.LN) and Saudi Aramco, has the capacity to process 275,000 barrels of crude oil a day.

Royal Dutch Shell conspired directly with Hitler, financed the Nazi Party, was anti-Semitic and sold out its own Dutch Jewish employees to the Nazis. Shell had a close relationship with the Nazis during and after the reign of Sir Henri Deterding, an ardent Nazi, and the founder and decades long leader of the Royal Dutch Shell Group. His burial ceremony, which had all the trappings of a state funeral, was held at his private estate in Mecklenburg, Germany. The spectacle (photographs below) included a funeral procession led by a horse drawn funeral hearse with senior Nazis officials and senior Royal Dutch Shell directors in attendance, Nazi salutes at the graveside, swastika banners on display and wreaths and personal tributes from Adolf Hitler and Reichsmarschall, Hermann Goring. Deterding was an honored associate and supporter of Hitler and a personal friend of Goring.
Deterding was the guest of Hitler during a four day summit meeting at Berchtesgaden. Sir Henri and Hitler both had ambitions on Russian oil fields. Only an honored personal guest would be rewarded with a private four day meeting at Hitler’s mountain top retreat.
