WASHINGTON, APRIL 1 | BY TIMOTHY GARDNER

(Reuters) – For a leader who has made fighting climate change a priority, President Barack Obama’s decision to approve Royal Dutch Shell’s return to oil and gas exploration off Alaska was seen by many environmentalists as a contradiction.

On Tuesday, his administration upheld a 2008 Arctic lease sale, clearing an important hurdle for Shell. The Interior Department will now consider the company’s drilling plan, which could take 30 days. But Shell, which has already spent about $6 billion exploring the Arctic, expects to return to polar waters this summer and is already moving oil rigs to Alaska. read more

ARTICLE BY TIM COCKS AND JOE BROCK PUBLISHED 1 April 2015 BY THE RAND DAILY MAIL OF SOUTH AFRICA

Between $10.8-billion and $20-billion of oil revenue was unaccounted for over a period of 19 months

“Sanusi’s concerns around the first of these mechanisms centre on the 2011 sale by Royal Dutch Shell of its interests in five oil fields.”

ARTICLE

In late 2013, Nigeria’s then central bank governor Lamido Sanusi wrote to President Goodluck Jonathan claiming that the state oil company had failed to remit tens of billions of oil revenues it owed the state.

After the letter was leaked to Reuters and a local news site, Jonathan publicly dismissed the claim and replaced Sanusi, saying the banker had mismanaged the central bank’s budget. A Senate committee later found Sanusi’s account lacked substance. read more

Dutch court refuses to halt Groningen gas production

THE HAGUE, APRIL 1

By Toby Sterling

(Reuters) – A Dutch judge on Wednesday refused to order a production halt at Europe’s biggest gas field, Groningen, where extraction is causing earthquakes, dealing a blow to opponents of government policy.

Production from the field was temporarily reduced in February after the Dutch Safety Board warned of possible dangers. A decision on the request for a quick ruling by the country’s Council of State by citizens’ groups from Groningen is expected within two weeks. read more

Shelling Out Sweeteners

The Irish satirical website broadsheet.ie has published an extensive article about Shell sponsored corruption in Ireland involving gifts (bribes) of up to €900,000 in value.

The website has published two key items; an invoice sent to Shell E&P Ireland by its agent OSSL for £30,000 worth of alcohol supplied to named senior police officers and a transcript of a covertly recorded 42 minute meeting between OSSL and its Dublin solicitor when the alcohol was mentioned over 60 times.

The solicitor in question Mr Marc Fitzgibbon, attended multiple high level meetings with Shell when the supposedly non-existent alcohol was freely discussed.

Shell has acknowledged receipt of the OSSL invoice raised years after the alcohol was supplied. It should be a simple matter for the police or tax authorities to investigate whether the invoice is legitimate. read more

Recently, Iran has been exposed to numerous sanctions by the West over concerns that the country was developing a nuclear project. However, talks between the US and Iran have started over a new nuclear deal. If the deal is successful, then sanctions are expected to ease off and Western energy companies are expected to return to the country.

According to Bloomberg, the discovery of oil in 1908 in the country laid the foundations for the development of the British oil major, BP plc (ADR) (NYSE:BP). An oil consultant in Iran, Nader Sultan said: “You look at the history of the oil companies, and that history is Iran.” read more

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The Department of Interior said Tuesday that it has affirmed corrections to an environmental analysis of a 2008 Arctic Ocean petroleum lease sale that brought in $2.7 billion for the federal government.

The expected decision regarding the lease in the Chukchi Sea off Alaska’s northwest coast opens the door for the department to review a 2015 Chukchi exploration plan by Royal Dutch Shell PLC.

The original environmental review for Lease Sale 193 was published in 2007, and the sale happened in February 2008. Shell was the most active bidder and spent $2.1 billion on Chukchi leases. read more

Oil drilling in U.S. Arctic waters may return this summer now that Shell has cleared a key government hurdle. Still, an energy bonanza in the frigid north won’t happen anytime soon.

On Tuesday, shortly after the Obama administration pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, its Department of the Interior gave Shell the preliminary go-ahead. Inteior approved its environmental review of Shell’s controversial lease for multiyear drilling in the Chukchi Sea, off the coast of Alaska. The energy-rich Arctic is drawing renewed interest because global warming is melting sea ice and making it potentially easier to develop oil and gas. read more

Alaska oil and gas lease draws criticism

Lease from 2008 tied up in courts because of environmental criticism.

By Daniel J. Graeber     |   UPI: April 1, 2015

Screen Shot 2015-03-25 at 11.26.05WASHINGTON, April 1 (UPI) — A decision from the Department of Interior to review energy exploration plans off the coast of Alaska is “unconscionable,” environmental groups said.

The federal government affirmed a 2008 lease sale for exploration in the Chukchi Sea off the coast of Alaska. The decision means the Department of Interior will begin formal reviews of exploration plans in the region, which will include an environmental analysis.

The lease was tied in up the court system amid complaints about the extent of environmental vetting. A preliminary drilling campaign from Royal Dutch Shell off the Alaskan coast in 2012 was plagued by problems, including a grounded drilling rig, violations of air pollution limits, engine failures on a tow ship and an oil spill containment system damaged during testing. read more

Shell Oil Drilling Serious Threat to Russian Polar Bear Reserve: Greenpeace

Screen Shot 2015-04-01 at 14.25.22

The oil drilling operation of Shell in the Chukchi Sea can harm the vast population of polar bears and walruses living in the Wrangel Island reserve.

The oil drilling operation of Dutch oil giant Shell in the Chukchi Sea, which is a marginal sea of the Arctic Ocean, is a threat to Russia’s Wrangel Island National Park, Greenpeace said in a report published on Wednesday.

“Shell has received government approval to drill exploratory wells in the Chukchi Sea. Greenpeace found that this drilling threatens not only the nature of the United States, but also Russia, in particular — the famous Arctic Reserve ‘Wrangel Island’,” they said in a statement. read more

Arctic drilling rights OKd for Shell Oil

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration on Tuesday reaffirmed a 2008 government auction of Arctic drilling rights over objections from environmentalists, delivering a major victory to Shell Oil Co. as it seeks to resume exploratory drilling in the Chukchi Sea this summer.

In validating the 7-year-old auction, Interior Secretary Sally Jewell stressed that the Arctic “is an important component of the administration’s national energy strategy.”

“We remain committed to taking a thoughtful and balanced approach to oil and gas leasing and exploration offshore Alaska,” Jewell said in a statement. “This unique, sensitive and often challenging environment requires effective oversight to ensure all activities are conducted safely and responsibly.” read more

Interior approves updated OCS Lease Sale analysis, clears one hurdle for Shell

The U.S. Interior Department published a long-awaited Record of Decision Tuesday on a contested 2008 Arctic offshore lease sale that had blocked Shell Oil’s exploration plans on leases it purchased.

The decision, or ROD, gave formal approval to a Supplementary Environmental Impact Statement published in February by the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management. The revised environmental document corrected a defect in the environmental study for the 2008 lease sale over which environmental groups sued. read more

U.S. approval moves Shell a step closer to Arctic drilling

(Reuters) – The U.S. Interior Department on Tuesday upheld a 2008 lease sale in the Chukchi Sea off Alaska, moving Royal Dutch Shell a step closer to returning to oil and gas exploration in the Arctic since it suffered mishaps in the region in 2012.

“The Arctic is an important component of the Administration’s national energy strategy, and we remain committed to taking a thoughtful and balanced approach to oil and gas leasing and exploration offshore Alaska,” said Interior Secretary Sally Jewell. read more
